The Work Environment Matters More Than Your Job Title, Choose Carefully

??Welcome to From Social Media Manager to Chief Marketing Officer?Exclusive?LinkedIn?Newsletter ?? In each issue, I'll deeply explain my journey from where I started as a Social Media Manager role to where I aspire to land as Chief Marketing Officer in the executive and leadership position. Subscribe here to follow my latest views from a human-centered perspective and my personal story as a mother, expat and technology connoisseur.

As in each letter, I come back to a point that is essential to build a career as a CMO and it is true that since the launch of this newsletter, I have been documenting by learning some very nice things over the long term...

What I remember is the changing environment of the workplace, its intrinsic value has evolved profoundly. First of all, the sense we want to give it, sprinkled with the way we want to work and especially in what environment we would like to do it. Then comes the mission of what we would like to achieve on a daily basis. This famous 9 to 5 what it looks like and what we are trying to put in it is just as important. For my part, it is essential to carefully define the four areas on which I want to invest my time and which, moreover, is continuously developed within a corporate mission in the service of its objectives. These axes are mine and commit only me for the rest of my professional progression.

We know that the roles of Chief Brand Officer and Chief Marketing Officer are sometimes paired and don't allow us to establish absolute clarity when we are not in the advertising industry. It's true that our ecosystem is shaped by the most vocabulary concepts of each other.

For me, the distinction is slight, but still necessary to understand how those make the difference in a company according Pieter Steenkamp, PhD and his article, that I encourage you to read.

Today, the CMO must also be experts in digital marketing, data analysis, and user experience, among others.

"A chief marketing officer (CMO) is a corporate executive responsible for marketing activities in an organisation. The CMO leads the marketing department and sets the company's marketing strategies. If the organisation does not have a CBO, then the CMO would also be the CBO."

As a dot-connector, I find it easy to define what people's value is, and allow them constantly to make sure that I understand correctly what they provide as a contributor for a project. Sometimes, titles can create divisions in a team or even in a department, but having this understanding bridges gaps and makes you confident in and out the room. That's why the empathy to connect people is deeply important for me regardless of their position or titles-related.?Empathy, humility and kindness are the often underrated leadership superpowers. This is something most of the companies should teach to every single person in their business. It's important to treat people with kindness and respect to have a positive social interactions with people where your spend most of your time at work. Job titles are fancy nowadays but mental peace of mind is priceless ??

Four axes of a successful company that matter to me and in the evolution of modern marketing as I conceive it today. I'm a true believer of building a marketing team that benefits and allows the people's brains to grow. Engaging through experiences, by defining the significant product and services and even more deliver the best narrative in content workflow. Moreover, if marketing is a fundamental driver of the business that you're currently working with. It's important to evolve your roadmap, especially when you intentionally express your desire to join the executive of a company.?

  1. Caring and collaborative management

I appreciate seeing kindness at all levels and that allows employees to be at ease in their workplace. What I mean by participatory is the submission of employees to contribute to promote their well-being at work. Instilling collective reflection for the common good is the real definition of participatory management. I really aspire to see companies take the subject of collaboration to heart. I could dedicate a letter on my vision of leadership in a while, but I still wanted to talk about it here.

  1. Ambitious and multicultural brand

The more I evolve in my professional career, the more I realize that the social capital of a brand is important to create a fruitful collaboration. We are living in a period of necessary uncertainty that allows everyone to ask the right questions. Reflection is essential at all times, I never underestimate it, because it determines much more than we imagine, for the future. While brands constantly redefine their characters, it's important to nurture the ambition they have.

  1. Get support from leadership

Encourage leaders and executives to promote an inclusive culture by being exemplary role models. This support should be focused on specific areas: clarifying the enrollment of what your marketing function is, allowing flexibility within the marketing team, and the ability to invest in your capacities.?There is no age limit to be a role model, I believe more in the vision of the championship than of mentoring which is sporadic according to the configuration of the company. It's essential to promote this internally. Role models can help you accelerate your career and be a better leader. Set up various programs to support the professional development of teams.

To find a champion, pick a person in a position of power who is not sexist and especially not afraid to challenge the status quo.?This can (and in a perfect world would) be a woman, but the numbers tell us that, right now, it is more likely to be a man. Why? Because in the corporate world, there is still a huge power gap between the sexes, and statistically speaking, men still get promoted more and occupy more higher level roles than women. Moreover, while it is absolutely essential for women to support and lift each other up, research shows that women who do make it to the top still have to overcome biased stereotypes to stay there, or are pressured to conform, which can make it difficult to speak out and be heard.

according Cindy Gallop on this article published on Harvard Business Review

  1. Social values and well-being matters

Your teams are kindly your nectar, and they think beyond the salary that you'll give them at the end of each month. For far too long, it was the only metric that everyone think about. But now, there is so much more to give. The social values and work flexibility can offer options to take into account the cultural and family needs of employees. Another point, inclusive benefits can provide wellness programs that meet the varied needs of employees.

  1. Building a strong corporate culture

Company culture, employee satisfaction, community engagement, environmental sustainability and other factors are components to the development of your company culture. This can evolve over time according to the initiatives undertaken and the evolution of their social performance. I deeply believe in the value that these kinds of actions can offer much more commitment to employees. It's important to note that the perception of a company's social actions can vary depending on individual opinions and changes over time.

Mental peace of mind is indeed priceless. And yet so many times at stake in the workplace. I think I never really cared about the multicultural aspect and I tend to look for it more and more. Also, kindness in the workplace is so overrated! While hiding behind values and never embodying them is something I've seen so often. As I'm looking for new people to work with, I will try to engage with current employees and collaborators. As a candidate you're screened and asked a lot. But I don't see why I couldn't hear from the employers. I don't know how I'll ask, but I will try. ?? I also firmly believe leaders should be exemplary and practice what they preach. So much good can come from that, motivation, drive, ambition but also engagement. Loved reading this piece. Very inspiring. Thank you. ??

Amélie Ebongué I fully resonate with you and you spotted it in these reflections. “…the empathy to connect people is deeply important for me regardless of their position or titles-related.” “It's important to treat people with kindness and respect to have positive social interactions with people where you spend most of your time at work. Job titles are fancy nowadays but mental peace of mind is priceless ??”
