Steel Figure Homage to Michael Irmer

Steel Figure Homage to Michael Irmer

During my time at the Düsseldorf Art Academy I had also begun an apprenticeship in restoration and conservation (Sabine Euler-Künsemüller Restaurateur, Düsseldorf). It was there I met a painter and sculpturer by the name of Michael Irmer. Michael soon became a great inspiration and a mentor to me. As our friendship grew, his images and powerful paintings established themselves as a main creative guide in my being.

Over the years, I have created many drawings, photographs and paintings that deal with the human silhouette-like figures. (www.davideulerart.com) Naturally, one can see how Michael Irmer was influenced by Alberto Giacometti. Lately, I created my first metal sculpture that deals with these figures. I missed my friend and mentor and wanted to continue the tribute to him also with a medium that he used for his art.

I used 5mm steel plates that I cut and welded. these I then mounted on a wood block. I blackened the steel and polished it to look good. I also chose the wood carefully as it definitely influences the composition.

It is interesting to me how this 3D object can create the illusion of a negative space when placed against a monochrome background. the dark silhouette-like figure appears to divide the space in two parts like two pieces of a paper.

I am currently creating more sculptures like this one for sale. You can contact me at: [email protected]. The 29" sculpture is made out of blackened steel mounted on a wooden block is sold for $1500.0 including shipping.
