In one of the recent sessions, one of the participants happened to ask me about what kind of a culture I would recommend for an organisation to be called a “good” organisation to work in. My instinct as a coach made me respond with a question - rather questions.
What makes the culture important to you ?
The answer was quite obvious. Yet when he shared his experiences in 2 organizations he had worked in so far, it became obvious not only to him but others in the room, that it is not only about culture in the organization but also about whether they can fit into the culture , work and grow and prosper. As a facilitator to enhance awareness and reflections , I opened up the conversation and sought views from others too.
Many things came up & perhaps it was all influenced by their own experiences in the organization they have been working for a while. One key thing that stood out was their desire to work in a place that allows them ( employees) to express and " Be Themselves".
A culture that allows employees to not only share their strengths but also their fears and shortcomings. They wanted the leaders to exhibit openness about their feelings and fears. Non-judgmental learning discussions which can create the opportunity for the team to apply the lessons learned from past ‘failures’ in a positive way rather than being judged & self-esteem getting decimated, they said, always works better towards creating and sustaining healthy work environment.
It is OKAY to make an error,’ and one must focus on a future solution - that is a creative confidence-building exercise. Harping on past problems only undermines confidence and learning and can even ruin the relationship between employee and the employer.
It was amazing to observe their energy and interest and it left me wondering.
Hence a question to Leaders in most organization. This question assumes huge significance for organizations because the people in the room were mostly #millennials.
Leaders, What role are you playing to bring in more authenticity, allowing people to " Be themselves" & manage diversity?
