Words of Wisdom That We Can All Benefit From

Words of Wisdom That We Can All Benefit From

I LOVE my intergenerational work and cherish the life lessons I gained caring for both my father and father-in-law, and having an intergenerational home.

During this long pandemic wearing masks, unable to have close contact with family and friends, schools, colleges, at work, etc., many people have become addicted to their devices and have expressed feelings of loneliness, isolation, and depression.?There has also been an increase in people expressing rage and anger, and striking out verbally and physically against people with different viewpoints and opinions.?In these times it’s important to see the humanity in others and to control your worst impulses.

World famous author Eckhart Tolle speaks to these issues and many others in his books and seminars (www.eckharttolle.com).?Here are some excerpts from Eckhart that are worthy of thought and adoption in your life:

“You are a human being.??These two words not only describe who you are as a member of a particular species but, if examined more deeply, also point to the twofold nature of your identity.??Human is who you are on the level of form; that is to say, your body and mind.??Those two aspects of your form identity make up your conditioned self.??That self is conditioned by genetics and the environment, as well as other factors as yet unknown to science.??Being, on the other hand, points to the essence of who you are as timeless, formless, and unconditioned consciousness.??Human and being, form and essence, are ultimately not separate, in the same way that a wave or ripple on the surface of the ocean is not separate from the ocean or from any other wave or ripple, although it may appear to be so.”

As our media and politicians have increasingly worsened our society by their singular focus on the outside and appearance of people and issues, it is important that we retain our ability to see the inner being of people.?Analyzing and understanding your own and other people’s inner being can help to move you and our society toward greater understanding and harmony.?Life and your value as a human should not be defined by tweets and “Likes” on social media.

An important communication tip is to slow down and think before being immediately reactive when someone says or does something that you disagree with.?Try to see that person’s essence or inner being and not simply the outer human form or words.?To help you with better understanding a friend or family member it is important to capture their life story so you can see the world more through their eyes.?That will often enable you to see how their life experiences may have shaped their worldview to be different from yours.

An image I have used with my large blended family is that of a pot with many flowers.?They may be different in size, color, and appearance, even though they come from the same nourishment of food and water in the soil, and they are tended equally by the same gardener.?So it is with people as human beings.?The human part that we see may have different size, color, personality, etc., while the being part, unseen to us, is the same with each person.
