Words Have Power

Words Have Power

It’s true, words have incredible power! They influence, direct, summarize, and communicate. Some words are more powerful than others. The following is a list of these words, their basic meaning, and my attempt to describe their power. It is my hope that you will think about them and see how they might apply to your life.

TRUTH…being in accordance with the actual state of affairs conformable to an essential reality fully realized or fulfilled. No surprise that this would head the list. You should be aware by now, if you are a regular reader, of the significance I place on TRUTH. I won’t go into additional detail here but if you have any doubt, I invite you to read other articles in my newsletter.

Honorable…being worthy of honor, deserving respect and admiration. Being worth can derive from personal qualities, such as their integrity, honesty, or courage, or it can be due to their accomplishments or status in society. With so many lies, deceptions, and half-truths, it is becoming more difficult to find an honorable person. When you find them, you need to not only give them your respect and admiration; you need to listen to what they say and do and try to follow them in every way.

Just… When something is morally and ethically sound, it's?just.?When we describe a person, a rule, or a war as just, we mean that whatever has been done has been done for good reasons and is fair to all sides. This aspect of fairness is the key to being just. Fairness to all is an incredible goal to achieve in a world where it seldom is.

Pure…We do not hear much about pure anymore except, perhaps, in advertising. ?It generally means free from extraneous matter or anything that would make it less than perfect for the use it is intended. It is simple, unmodified, and without blemish or stain. When you describe something as pure, you mean that it is clear and represents what it is intended to represent. It is difficult, even in advertising, to find anything pure. When you do you can be assured that it is what it is supposed to be and not false or misleading.

Lovely…when is the last time you heard anything, or anyone referred as lovely? It means pleasing to the eye, enjoyable, kind, and pleasant to be around. Great company, people who think alike, who are supportive of you are all described in this word. The most important aspect of this word, however is it’s root…love. There is no more powerful emotion, thought, or word!

Commendable…the meaning here focusses on deserving. It is similar to honorable but different in that goes beyond just deserving praise to an actually, actionable feat of giving praise in a public setting. It is powerful for a person to actually hear your approval of something they said or did.

Excellence…is a way of stating that something or someone has excelled in what they said or did, gone above and beyond what might have been expected of them to a higher level. It establishes a standard to seek to achieve. It is more than just greatness; it defines an achievement.

Worthy of Praise…Now we are crossing into an entirely new level or expression of admiration. We are moving into heavenly realms, to show our gratitude and appreciation of what God has done for us. Many things might be at a level where they should be recognized and praised but none are at the level of God.

We find this list of words in Philippians, the fourth chapter. It reminds us of characteristics we need to have and practice in order to gain God’s Peace and Grace and have it with us at all times. It is important to “think about these things,” to learn, receive, and practice them.

It is TRUE that words have great power and impact, but this power and impact comes from their meaning and usage in our lives. OneTRUTH Leadership seeks to discern the TRUTH of living out our lives with the knowledge, power and understanding of God’s Word. Apply them to your life and see the possibilities.
