The electrifying dance between charging points and electric vehicles! Let’s dive into the numbers, shall we?
As of the end of 2022, there were 2.7 million public charging points scattered across the globe. That’s quite a network of power outlets, don’t you think? And guess what? Over 900,000 of those charging points were freshly installed in 2022 alone! That’s like a 55% increase compared to the previous year—almost as impressive as a squirrel stockpiling acorns before winter.
Now, let’s break it down further:
Slow Chargers: These are the patient ones, like the tortoises of the charging world. Globally, more than 600,000 public slow charging points were set up in 2022. China took the lead here, installing a whopping 360,000 slow chargers, bringing their total to over 1 million. Europe also stepped up its game, with the Netherlands leading the pack at 117,000 slow chargers. Meanwhile, the United States had a more leisurely growth rate, but hey, slow and steady wins the race, right?
Fast Chargers: These are the adrenaline junkies, zipping along highways and addressing range anxiety. In 2022, the world gained 330,000 fast chargers, and guess who was the star of the show? Yep, China again—contributing almost 90% of that growth. They’ve got a grand total of 760,000 fast chargers! Meanwhile, Europe revved up its engines too, boasting over 70,000 fast chargers by the end of 2022. Germany, France, and Norway led the charge (pun intended) in this category.
But wait, there’s more!
In the European Union, the average ratio of EVs to chargers in 2021 was 14 EVs per charger. That’s an improvement from the previous year, and it’s even above the recommended level of 10. Plus, the average kilowatt (kW) per EV hovered just above 1 kW—a level proposed for 2030. So, Europe’s charging infrastructure is doing a little victory dance, I’d say!
And here’s a fun fact: There are nearly ten times as many private chargers (mostly at people’s homes) as there are public ones. Home charging is like cozy pajamas for EVs—it’s their comfort zone!
?
So, my friend, the world is plugging in, one charging point at a time. And with initiatives like the European Investment Bank’s commitment to alternative fuels infrastructure, we’re on the right track (or should I say, charging lane?) toward an electrifying future!
Got any more EV-related questions? I’m all ears—or should I say, all electrons?

Brazil’s EV charging infrastructure
Brazil, land of samba, football, and lush rainforests, is also making strides in the electrification dance. Here’s how it stacks up:
Charging Points in Brazil:
As of now, Brazil boasts around 1,250 public charging stations. Not too shabby, right? But wait, there’s more! These charging points are mostly led by power distribution utilities or vehicle manufacturers. So, it’s like a samba party where the utilities and automakers are the lead dancers, and EVs are grooving to the beat.
And guess where the majority of these charging points are doing their samba moves? Yep, in the vibrant city of S?o Paulo! About 47% of Brazil’s charging stations are concentrated right there.
BYD and Shell’s Power Play:
Recently, BYD (those electric vehicle wizards) teamed up with Shell (yes, the fossil fuel giant is also doing the EV cha-cha) to install 600 DC fast charging points in Brazil. That’s like adding a bunch of turbo boosts to the Brazilian charging network.
Now, here’s the interesting part: These 600 charging points together contribute a total of 18 megawatts of power. But when you break it down, each charging point averages out to just 30 kW. It’s like giving each EV a quick espresso shot—enough to keep them dancing down the road!
Ambitions and Projections:
Brazil isn’t stopping there. We’ve got big dreams! By the end of this year, we’re projecting 3,000 more recharging points. And in the next three years, we’re aiming for a whopping 10,000 charging points. That’s like turning up the volume on the EV samba beats!
Plus, other players are joining the carnival too. Energias do Brazil SA (EDP), in cahoots with VW, Audi, Porsche, Siemens, ABB, and Electric Mobility, is setting up 30 fast-charging stations across the country. It’s like a lineup of samba schools, each bringing their own moves to the parade!
So, Brazil might not be leading the global charging point conga line, but it’s definitely shaking its hips and making its mark. And who knows? Maybe soon, EVs will be doing the bossa nova all the way from the Amazon rainforest to Rio Grande do Sul
