The words and the bees ????
There’s something amazing about the way language moves us as people. Words can elevate, resonate, make you feel like part of something bigger than yourself, or like a sentence was written just for you. About a year ago, I joined VUSH because the way they spoke about self love and pleasure ignited something in me. It was the first time I’d seen language around my sexual wellness that didn’t make me feel insignificant or embarrassed. It changed the way I looked at my body, my love life, and my relationship with myself. Now I’m lucky enough for my job to be making sure those words are doing the same for VUSH babes all around the world.
We get messages every day from people in our community who feel the same way I did when I first discovered VUSH. We found that as our community grew, people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, and backgrounds were coming to us with the same message: they all felt empowered by what VUSH stood for. This meant our ‘sex toys for women’ led branding was no longer enough - and that it was never accurate. When we spoke about breaking the stigma around female pleasure, what we actually meant was the stigma around the pleasure of anyone with a vulva. Yes, there’s still work to do there (I have some very strong opinions about the orgasm gap) but we very quickly realised the words we chose to speak about VUSH needed to be more inclusive. Using gendered terms that equated genitals with gender played an active role in preventing the widespread acceptance of emerging language around gender identities. Holding onto this language meant holding back our community.??
The way we spoke as a brand had to change, so we’ve been shaking up our language on the DL, saying goodbye to gendered terms and hello to fully gender inclusive language across the board. We’ve made these changes because it’s important to us that we’re meeting the diverse voices around us with respect and authenticity. We want to create content and products that reflect the values of our team and our community, and we believe this is the future of the sexual wellness industry; beautiful, empowering products that can be used by anyone to help celebrate their sexual wellness journey.?
As we dedicate ourselves to supporting all babes, we say that we see you. For anyone who has been made to feel their pleasure isn’t important. For anyone who is learning to love their body in a world that has made them feel they shouldn’t. For those whose high school sex education teacher never even said the word ‘clitoris’. We see you, and if it feels like we’re speaking directly to you, it’s because we are. We’re making sure there’s space for everyone in the VUSH community, because absolutely everyone is deserving of love.?
Words are powerful. Using them in a way that empowers and uplifts our community is just the first step in the exciting move towards full gender neutrality at VUSH. We can’t give too much away, but keep an eye on us over the next 12 months - things are about to get very interesting.??
