Word Play .... Toric IOL Calculations...
For those of you who follow IOL power calculations for Cataract Surgery....
I am in for a training session with the Doctor on the ORA Verifye + (This device Calculates the IOL power on table after the Cataract is removed https://www.myalcon.com/products/surgical/ora-system/
So I tell this Doctor... The ORA Verifye + measures the entire real time aphakic wavefront to derive the IOL power. So the actual POSTERIOR corneal curvature (PCC) contributing to the entire wavefront also determines the IOL power.
He tells me - O Yeah? The Barrett calculator also INCORPORATES the PCC into the calculations - I have being using it with great success for years.... So what's the big deal?
Well, the deal is understanding the difference between a CALCULATION or a PREDICTION Versus an actual MEASUREMENT. Understand this thoroughly when coming across terms like this or that formula CONSIDERS, INCORPORATES, ACCOUNTS FOR the PCA
A MEASUREMENT is the most accurate representation of the truth. There is an element of uncertainty, however small, in a PREDICTION or a CALCULATION.
The Barrett Calculator that CONSIDERS, INCORPORATES, ACCOUNTS FOR the PCA does not work on the specific value of the posterior corneal curvature of that eye. Rather it works on a predicted value based on a statistical analysis.
The ORA MEASURES (and analyses) the Wavefront and Refraction to deduce the IOL Power.
This is not to undermine the accuracy or importance the Barrett Toric calculator, but just to make people understand the finer nuances of Toric IOL power determination
