Word of the month "Striving"

Someone recently asked my co-founder and me how we were doing and how our venture was progressing. We had become tired of the lazy responses which included phrases like, “We are well” and “We are ok”. These phrases didn’t represent how we were doing.

We were looking for something that explained our state of being - something that captured a new tendency towards forward movement, daily effort, a necessary tension between self-doubt and conviction, a growing peace with ambiguity, and an overwhelming sense of purpose.

And so: We replied, “We are striving.”

We are happy with this word-choice because striving is an extraordinary word that builds in effort and bidding and being in the throes of achieving a purposeful goal, despite the myriad challenges. It is an engaged state which speaks of focusing on the process more and more, but not without an eye on steady growth and improvement. It is a welcome state, a state in which you arrive after the restlessness and anxiousness associated with the ultimate outcome has left you, but the focus on the effort has heightened.
