A word on fear.

I have a lot to say on fear. I have experienced being completely frightened - petrified. Nothing life-threatening, just the usual society/human being stuff that terrifies most of us. I kept going and broke through it over and over again. It’s never-ending when you are playing a big game. Here is some of what I have discovered in doing that.
We view fear as bad because it feels scary and uncomfortable. We view uncomfortable as something bad too because it feels the way it does.
Interesting to note that in the gym, the uncomfortable feeling is what we strive for or at least recognise to be what is 'needed for growth’.
If you want to break through your fear we need to learn to be able to tell the difference between fear as an opportunity vs fear as a real-life threat. Uncomfortable as a pathway for growth vs leading us to something bad.
In being able to relate to fear in this way you’ll be unstoppable.
So try this, write down what you are most frightened of in your business/life and write down how it’s stopping you.
Now, this thing you are so frightened of happening - Is it a real threat to your actual life or an overly dramatised threat to your circumstances/identify/reputation/sense of self?
And what if you take it on and it works out? What’s possible?
And if it doesn’t work what’s the worst that could happen? Really?
Now choose.
As a coach - If talking to that potential client, doing that Facebook Live video, or making that X thousand dollar investment is the difference between you living/dying, being in a home or on the street - a threat to your life - then fair enough, don’t do it.
But if it’s just a threat to your identity and a fear-based on a huge amount of drama and story then see if you can get that in protecting yourself and your identity in this way (from this thing that doesn’t even exist), that while you appear to remain safe it’s costing you the most important thing of all - your freedom.
And what's more - you are reinforcing for yourself the very thing you are out to transform in others - ‘I am not good enough’.
Each and every time you take an action even though you are scared - you are telling you and the whole universe - "I am enough", "I can do it". Do that often enough and see what happens.
So ask yourself - do you want to be safe or do you want to be free? Do you want to let your imagination dominate your life or inspire it? Do you want to relate to yourself like you are not good enough or start getting who you are and reinforcing this with your actions?
If you truly do want to live free and inspired try this - move toward fear vs away from it, learn from your fear vs running away from it. Swing out, play big, take your wins and your losses, be willing to f*ck up and don't make it personal or significant. Pick yourself up having learned what you learned and repeat - over and over again.
Keep going like I did, as your heroes did, like you have done previously in your own life! Because you can do it - you know this to be true already - you just forget sometimes.

5 年Yes, I have had an overriding fear of lack throughout my life. OK I have lost things like houses and possessions but I have survived cancer and I am still here!

5 年This was a sobering reminder Ryan. I always say that if I can live with the worst thing that could possibly happen in a situation then it can’t be that bad. It might sound a little dark but it has helped me to move past fear many times in the past.

5 年"do you want to be safe or do you want to be free" ... What a powerful question, so powerful that it calls directly to your soul. So grateful you chose freedom so myself and so many other coaches can be on the receiving end of that choice. Now it's up to us to do the same and keep paying it forward!
