Word - Empty
Meaning - without meaning or value
Usage in Design Context - Today's word is empty. As you read the note below you will hopefully agree with me that is 'not without meaning or value'. Empty is a design word. However, for a change, this particular word has not been in use in Western Design (or Indian). It is eastern in origin- Japan. Please have a listen to Kenya Hara's philosophy on the topic of 'empty' *. The word, as I started to explore and understand is quite deep.
Hara goes on to say that empty is the unsaid, unseen, unexpressed... The Japanese flag, which has the white, denotes the concept of empty (interpretation of the Red circle is left to the viewer, Hara says). Importantly, it is different from 'simple', "Empty is not Simple". Now, that is some food for thought!
