Our History

Woodlands began in 1986 and was founded by Executive Director, Tracy Leaver, a New Jersey state licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Woodlands is located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey and is a 501c3 charity.

Woodlands cares for over 1,700 orphaned or injured wild animals annually. As our communities continue to grow, as well as the loss of habitat, the need for our services continues to increase. Woodlands is the primary facility care for black bears and endangered bobcat. In addition, Woodlands provides care for wild mammal and reptiles such as raccoons, skunks, opossums, rabbits, woodchucks, foxes, squirrels, coyotes, bats, otters, porcupines, turtles and snakes.

Woodlands has a staff of 4 highly trained employees that work alongside an army of over 40 volunteers that help who care for the animals until their release. The doctors and staff at the Animal Hospital of Clinton-Perryville, Voorhees Corner Veterinary Clinic, Oradell Animal Hospital, and West Hunterdon Animal Hospital generously treat animals needing more extensive care such as X-rays, fracture repair or surgery. All animals are maintained until they are healthy enough to survive in the wild. Woodlands’ goal is to release every animal back into the wild. In the cases where an animal is determined “non-releasable”, Woodlands may offer that animal sanctuary to live out its days with the utmost quality of life.

If you are interested in joining our friendly team of concerned animal advocates, please consider offering your time and talent to the Woodlands Wildlife Refuge Board of Trustees.
