The wood used for pencil industry
The pencil wood needs to meet following requirements: straight texture, fine and uniform structure, soft or slightly soft, slightly brittle, less resin, low hygroscopicity, small expansion and contraction, and no deformation.
At present, the wood for pencils mainly includes red cypress, fragrant fir, Alnus cremastogyne burkill, eucalyptus, cedar, poplar, linden and so on.
1.Red cypress also has a name called pencil cypress. Heartwood is available in a variety of colors, from light yellow to light red to dark brown. The texture of the wood is straight. It is non-porous and has a unique aromatic scent. Red cypress is easy to dry, has low shrinkage, and exhibits rare dimensional stability during use.
2.Fragrant fir has woody fragrance and smooth texture, anti-corrosion and insect-repellent. It is one of the most important specialty timber species in southern China.
3.Alnus cremastogyne burkill is light and soft, with moderate hardness, straight texture, fine structure and loose, water and moisture resistance, is a good material for pencils.

4.Eucalyptus is close and irregular, the side material layer is wide, white to light pink, heartwood is light brown red. Eucalyptus is a fast-growing forest, but it breaks easily and is not a very good material for pencils.
5.Cedar wood, also known as incent cedar, Atlantic cedar, has aromatic substances, can extract fragrant essential oil. It is a good material to make natural color body pencils.
6.Poplar is a fast-growing and high-yielding tree species, which has the characteristics of wide adaptability, long annual growth, fast production, etc. It is widely planted in the south and north of China, so its resources are abundant. Its quality is soft, stable, and cheap. After proper treatment, it is suitable for pencils.
7.Linden has the characteristics of wear resistance, corrosion resistance, non-cracking, fine wood grain, easy processing and strong toughness. The white linden wood is milky white, gradually lightening to the brown-red heartwood, with deeper stripes sometimes. Linden is an excellent material for making pencils, but currently linden wood has few resources, so linden pencils are relatively expensive.
