You've heard many people cursing "bail reform" as being responsible for the state of public safety in New York State ever since its inception in 2018. While it's partially true, bail reform is only one of several criminal justice reforms passed by New York State since 2017 that have had both positive and negative impacts.
In addition to restructuring laws that affect local courts and how bail applies to certain charges and defendants, other areas of reform (in effect and currently proposed) include Raise The Age, Less Is More, Marijuana Decriminalization, The HALT Act, Discovery, Clean Slate, Elder Parole, and Sentencing Reform.
A group of people representing diverse interests in Rochester, Monroe County, and surrounding areas called The Consortium For Safe Communities (CSC) has been spreading the message about the need for changes to the reforms. Early this month, the group sent a letter, now signed by more than 2,000 individuals, to legislative leaders in Albany urging changes.
The CSC is giving lawmakers until 5 p.m. February 2nd to signify their support by signing the letter themselves. You can add your support directly here.
Later this month, CSC members from business, the clergy, government, law enforcement, community groups, and others travel to Erie County to meet with leaders there to garner support in the Buffalo region.
The CSC is currently focused on achieving four goals: establishing a repeat offender clause and creating a dangerousness standard in bail reform; writing and rewriting the reform as a "clean law" easily understood by everyone; and opposing proposed "elder parole" legislation.
Since December, the CSC has been getting the word out through local media. For your convenience, here are some of the links:
