Welcome back to the LinkedIn Playbook for Leaders ????!?This week, we’re diving into a question that many of you have asked:
How do I know if LinkedIn is really working for me? ??♂?
How many times have you posted on LinkedIn, waiting for engagement, and …?? You get a few hundred views, 8 or 9 likes, no comments. It’s easy to feel it’s not worth posting. I’ve worked with countless leaders who've felt the same. They're ready to give up when suddenly- BOOM ?? - a new project or lead appears out of nowhere.
?? Here’s the catch: it’s NOT out of nowhere.
Real Talk: LinkedIn Works in the Background
Take one of my recent clients, for example. She’d been posting about her shift into independent consulting twice a week, seeing only moderate engagement. She thought LinkedIn wasn’t working for her.?
But when she landed the new project, she realized that several former colleagues had seen those posts. Those connections remembered her expertise and referred her to their new boss. Without those posts, those former colleagues might have had no clue about the shift—and no referral would have happened.
?? This is how LinkedIn generates leads: quietly building trust and keeping you top of mind.
The Invisible LinkedIn Customer Journey
Let’s break it down. Imagine this:??
?? You meet someone at a conference.??
?? They check out your profile but don’t engage with your posts … yet.??
?? Over the next few months, you post consistently.?
?? They don’t like or comment ... but they view.
? 3 -6 months later they engage – a like or comment, followed by a direct message: “Hey, remember me? We met at that event a few months ago. I’ve been following your posts and I’d love to meet about working together.”??
Here’s what’s actually happening: your content is building trust behind the scenes. This silent process is LinkedIn doing its magic. It’s not just about the views, likes and comments. It’s about being consistently present so that when someone is ready to take action, you’re the first person they think of.
5 Top Signs that LinkedIn is Working for You
LinkedIn content amplifies your visibility, driving personal brand awareness. You can see if it's working by noticing how many people are more aware of your presence and expertise. Here's how I explain it to my clients:
1. ?? You are posting consistently
It’s not about instant feedback. Posting regularly is like planting seeds. You’re building trust, and that takes time. You don’t need to post at the same time each week, but do post least once a week, share pictures of yourself and reply to comments.
2. ?? You hear from contacts that they have seen your posts
For example, at an event you reconnect with someone in your network. They mention that they like your posts, or that they see you’re active on LinkedIn.?
3. ?? Your profile views and followers are increasing?
If these are increasing, you’re engaging viewers, even if they don’t show it with likes or comments. People are curious enough to look into your profile and follow you.
4. ???? New contacts and leads check your profile after you meet in person
Your LinkedIn visibility is driving decisions and confirming your expertise during the consideration and selection phases – even if it doesn’t show in the metrics right away.
5. ??? People reach out on LinkedIn months after you first connected
If they are, it means LinkedIn is working behind the scenes. They’ve been watching your content without you even knowing.
