Wondering how to turbocharge your growth-stage?startup?

(NOTE: you may have seen this post before but it's such an important topic that I wanted to also share with my newsletter peeps)

Ok, where were we....

??Let's talk about "Building in Public"! ??

First off, the whole "but what if they steal my idea" fear is way off.

  1. It's NOT about the idea, it IS about the effect development and execution of that idea...(very different things)
  2. Nobody will do that they way that you do (your systems and strategies are YOURS). IF they do try to steal it, they won't execute the way that you execute!
  3. EVERY successful idea is developed and executed from a problem in society and usually something similar is already doing the rounds. YOU have effectively analysed your competitors and found a unique way of building a solution to the SAME problem.
  4. You don't reveal sensitive when building in public, or proprietary information, you simply show your journey to bring viewers along on the journey. People buy from real people, not products. Buying signals are emotional based.

It's the difference between "show" and "tell". Most will not understand TELL, but if you SHOW, they understand it much better.

I use the "show" method when pre-qualifying startups for growth support and/or potential investment, but that's another post for another day.

(I believe) that as a startup you have a distinct advantage when you build in public...

Read that again...

?? Some tips on why is can be a game-changer ??

???Trust Building: When you share your journey, challenges, and victories, you're inviting your audience into your world. This transparency builds trust and shows authenticity.

- Just look at?#buffer??and?#groove?! They've thrived by openly sharing their struggles and milestones, creating a community around their missions.

?? Feedback Goldmine: By opening up about your progress, you're creating a direct line to your users. Their feedback becomes invaluable.

-?#producthunt?is a prime example. They've built a platform around community feedback, allowing them to fine-tune their product based on real user insights.

???Network Magic: Building in public opens doors to unexpected opportunities. Potential collaborators, partners, and even investors may find you through your updates.

- Think about?#Zapier?and their journey. Their open approach attracted partnerships with major players like?#Google?and?#Microsoft, propelling them to new heights!

???Brand Amplification: Your startup's story deserves to be heard! By sharing it openly, you're creating a buzz around your brand.

-?#basecamp?is a great example. They've made their company's journey a central part of their brand, and it's resonated with users worldwide. Stand out, and let your unique voice shine!

???Investor Allure: Investors love to see progress. When you build in public, you're showcasing your dedication and the milestones you're hitting. THEY seek YOU out instead of the other way around!

- Look at?#Airbnb?they gained early traction by sharing their growth stats, which ultimately attracted crucial early-stage investors. It's a powerful magnet for smart money!

I do not know why I didn’t receive any notifications for this article before but luckily I found it while reading your latest newsletter, Kellie. Thanks so much for mentioning me and your kind words. You’re awesome, too. ?? I am a big fan of building in public as everyone in my network knows I am more than happy to help any founder who is considering it by sharing insights from my experience. ??

Good points in this article. I need to think how to apply that to building a consultancy. I'm not shy, but I'm not one who enjoys being on public display despite creating content. But it's mainly LI friends who engage so it's not scary. Anyways, thanks for sharing your thoughts Kellie.

Being public is opposite to the shy. But you never lose when you act and distinct you from the crowd. Which is essential and worth to do. Great examples of diiferent approaches Kellie O Hara
