Wondering How to Finance Your Bestseller Dream… Here’s the Answer!

What is the cost of becoming a writer? If you want to be traditionally published, then a PC or Mac with word processing software, a reliable internet service and your imagination will do in the beginning, but eventually you will want to get a publisher and you may need to acquire an agent to do so. That agent and publisher will need to be wooed by your work, and in order to do that you may need to invest in some writer’s workshops, attend a few conferences or even hire an editor on your way to being published. It also pays to join some of the more popular national writing groups.

While we are talking about “profitizing” your passion, let me offer you a word of caution. Please don’t go and quit your day job without counting the cost to do so. While it is true that there are some very successful people who earn a luxurious living from the books they publish, they represent the exception, not the rule. And it is important to note, that like all writers, they had to first pay their dues.

When considering the cost of bringing a book from concept to publication, don’t forget that the time you have invested in this project is valuable. If your present hourly rate is $25, the 240 hours you spend putting together a manuscript compares to a $6000 pay check for services rendered. Also, consider the office supplies used, ink cartridges, electricity, cost of Internet service, light bulbs, wear and tear on your computer, etc.

Your book may require research. Perhaps you will have to purchase additional reference books on your topic. You may need to make telephone calls; a text won’t do when you are interviewing a potential expert. Electronic access to media can be a great asset in most cases. But, if you are a novelist writing historical fiction, you may have to travel to the place you are referencing to do adequate research on that time period. If you are writing a nonfiction book, you may have to travel to discuss your topic with an expert or attend a conference where major thought leaders are discussing it.

And don’t forget the costs of commitment that money can’t buy. What about the time you spend away from your family and friends while completing your writing project? If you run a business, how will this compromise the time you are required to invest there? In other words, what are the opportunity costs associated with writing your book?

There are other intrinsic costs: the emotional, mental and intellectual capital you expend as a result of being on this writer’s journey. I salute you for your courage. If you are looking to raise funds for your book project and you are interested in:
