George Washington Morrison Nutt, better known by his stage name Commodore Nutt, was an American dwarf and an entertainer associated with P. T. Barnum. In 1861, Nutt was touring New England with a circus when Barnum hired him to appear at the American Museum in New York City. Barnum gave Nutt the stage name Commodore Nutt, a wardrobe that included naval uniforms, and a miniature carriage in the shape of an English walnut. Nutt became one of the Museum’s major attractions.
In the hallowed halls of the American Museum, where wonders and curiosities danced beneath the gaslit glow, there existed a figure whose diminutive stature belied the magnitude of his presence. George Washington Morrison Nutt, known to the world as Commodore Nutt, was a man whose life unfolded like a tale spun from the threads of fate and whimsy.
It was P. T. Barnum, the master showman himself, who first beheld Nutt’s remarkable form, a creature of sharp wit and drollery, endowed with a head as splendid as any sovereign’s crown. Barnum, ever the purveyor of spectacle, saw in Nutt not merely a curiosity, but a treasure to be showcased upon the grand stage of the American Museum.
Thus began Nutt’s journey into the realm of entertainment, adorned with naval uniforms and nestled within a carriage fashioned in the likeness of an English walnut. As he traversed the bustling streets of New York City, Nutt captured the imaginations of all who beheld him, a miniature marvel amidst the clamor of the metropolis.
But amidst the dazzle of the spotlight, Nutt’s heart beat with a longing for connection, a desire that found solace in the presence of Lavinia Warren, another diminutive figure whose beauty cast a spell upon his soul. Yet, Lavinia, ensnared in the spectacle orchestrated by Barnum, saw Nutt only as a “nice little boy,” destined to play a role in her grand narrative.

When Lavinia pledged her heart to General Tom Thumb in a wedding of unparalleled extravagance, Nutt stood by as the best man, his spirit weighed down by the chains of unrequited love and resentment. He retreated from the realm of romance, seeking solace in solitude until the day he found companionship in the arms of Lilian Elston, a beacon of light amidst the shadows of his past.
As Nutt’s fame traversed oceans and continents, he journeyed with the Thumbs and Minnie Warren, venturing into realms where royalty bowed before his diminutive form. Yet, as his star ascended, so too did the specter of disagreement with Barnum, leading Nutt to chart his own course upon the windswept shores of the American West.
There, amidst the dusty saloons of Oregon and California, Nutt found refuge in the embrace of laughter and song, weaving tales of mirth and mischief beneath the vast expanse of the western sky. But fate, ever capricious, had other plans for the Commodore, casting him back into the embrace of the city that birthed his legend.
In the twilight of his days, as the tendrils of Bright’s disease ensnared his fragile form, Nutt found himself cloaked in the shadows of mortality. He passed from this world on a May eve, his spirit taking flight from the confines of flesh and bone, leaving behind a legacy made from the fabric of dreams.
In the quiet embrace of Merrill Cemetery, beneath the boughs of ancient trees, Nutt’s earthly journey came to an end. Yet, his spirit lingered in the hearts of those who beheld his wondrous tale, a testament to the enduring power of laughter in the face of adversity.????
