Women’s Role in the Logistics Industry

Women’s Role in the Logistics Industry

It is well known that the logistics and supply chain industry is mostly run by men.? However, in recent years, we’ve been seeing an increase in female personnel, which means that we are evolving as an industry by diversifying our teams. According to the website Globalia, “Even a few years back, the transportation and logistics industry used to be a completely male-dominated sector. The poor perception of career opportunities is a significant deterrent in this regard. In spite of representing around half of the global population, the role of women in this male-dominated sector used to be marginal for decades. Nevertheless, in the last few years, the increased focus on inclusion and gender diversity has seen an increase in women professionals in this sector, as well as in the efficiency of the industry. This only proves that the e-supply chain industry, as a whole, surely could do well with a more diverse workforce.”?

We spoke with experts in our company, and this is what they had to say:?

Cristina Usuga , Business Development Representative here at Hubtek affirms that the logistics industry has traditionally been run by men.? “But this is gradually changing, as many women are entering the field. This can provide a lot of benefits to businesses, such as the ability to gain unique insights and innovative solutions to logistic challenges.? Women bring their own unique perspectives and skills to the table, which can lead to better problem-solving, decision-making, and growth in the industry.”?

“It is important to continue to support and encourage women to pursue careers in logistics by implementing programs that support women's professional development, mentoring and networking opportunities, and actively promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion within the workplace. By doing so, businesses can benefit from the huge potential of women.”?

Hubtek’s Sales Team Leader, Carolina Mu?oz , also stated that historically women have been underrepresented in the logistics industry. “According to several studies, women make up around 8% of truck drivers and about 32% of the workforce in transportation and logistics-related roles. However, in recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the value that women bring to the industry, and efforts are being made to increase gender diversity in logistics.? More women are entering the industry, filling many different roles.”?

“Hubtek is a great advocate for gender equality, with 47% of our employees and 53% of our leaders being female. By hiring women, logistics companies can diversify their labor profile and bring perspectives into play from a broader pool of people who possess high attention to detail, a customer-oriented mindset and a strong work ethic. Overall, women in logistics still face some challenges, but the trend is to make gender diversity a priority.”?

Finally, we heard from Laura Restrepo , Business Development Manager at Hubtek.? She believes that increasing the number of women on the team who bring different perspectives and experiences improves problem-solving, which can lead to better decision-making, increase creativity and innovation, and drive us to improve the customer experience.?

“The number of women in the logistics and transportation industry has been increasing over the years, and having more women on the team can help you better understand your customers' needs and preferences. Having a diverse team, with safe spaces to contribute different points of view, helps employees feel valued and included, which means lower turnover and motivated employees.”?

“There are studies that show that companies with diverse teams are more likely to exceed their competitors and achieve a higher level of profitability. I truly believe that diversifying teams in the logistics and transportation industry improves problem-solving, helps to develop new ideas that will increase customer satisfaction, and decreases employee turnover.”?
