Women's Mental Health Advocacy

Women's Mental Health Advocacy

In a world where mental health increasingly takes centre stage, the focus on women's mental health needs nuanced attention. Women and girls face unique challenges that can significantly impact their mental wellbeing, from societal expectations and gender-based violence to access to healthcare and economic disparities. Advocacy for women's mental health is about addressing these issues and promoting a more equitable society where the mental health rights of women and girls are respected and upheld.

Statistics show that women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression, and 1 in 5 women will experience an anxiety disorder in her lifetime. Gender-based violence, which affects nearly 1 in 3 women globally, is a significant contributor to mental health struggles. These numbers emphasise the urgent need for action.

To consider

  1. Depression: Globally, women are about 1.5 to 2 times more likely than men to experience depression, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This gender disparity is consistent across different countries and cultures.
  2. Anxiety: Similarly to depression, women are almost twice as likely as men to experience anxiety disorders. The prevalence of anxiety disorders is higher in women across various age groups and regions.
  3. Gender-Based Violence: Gender-based violence, which can contribute to mental health problems, affects women disproportionately compared to men. Globally, nearly 30% of women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, while the rates for men are significantly lower.

These global comparisons highlight the greater burden of mental health issues that women face compared to men, due to a combination of biological, social, and cultural factors.

Our upcoming event aims to raise awareness and drive change. Attendees will engage with experts and advocates, learning about the latest research, policy advancements, and strategies for empowering women and girls. Key sessions will focus on education, access to services, and the importance of amplifying voices with lived experiences.

By prioritising collaboration, we can create global change. Whether you’re a mental health professional, policy advocate, or passionate supporter, your participation is essential to fostering a society where women’s mental health is a priority.
