Women's History Month: Meet our Solutions Engineer Evelyn!

Women's History Month starts today! At Optibus, equal opportunity for all genders is one of our core values and to celebrate Women’s History Month, we want to shine the spotlight on some women who are shaping the future of mobility with us. Today, Evelyn Cortez, Solutions Engineer in the Customer Success team, shares some of her insights with us.

What drew you to work at Optibus??

The possibility to align my technical knowledge and market experience in public transportation with technology. Technology can be, and should be an ally in improving our transportation systems.

What is your job at Optibus and what is your daily work like?

I am a Solutions Engineer in the Customer Success team in Latin America. My role is to conduct sessions with our clients during the implementation process. The role is to guide, teach and help them to get the most out of the Optibus platform.?

Is there a particular woman that has had a significant influence on your life and/or career??

I had the pleasure of being influenced by different amazing women; it would be unfair to cite just one. My mom was a young mother with immense courage that I feel I would not have had without her influence. Also, my aunt is a professor in a university and an expert in Brazil when it comes to mental health. In the transportation area I have also been fortunate to learn? from two?great professionals Eunice Horácio and Richele Cabral.

What challenges have you faced in your career, and how have you overcome them?

Women are not well represented in public transportation in Brazil. It is common to hear comments that are not inclusive and unfortunately women are not always treated equally. I have experienced this personally on a few occasions and my approach is always to be assertive and showcase my technical knowledge and confidence.

Best advice you’ve ever been given??

Never let anyone convince you that you are unable to achieve big and amazing things in life.

What advice would you give to women who wish to start their careers in a tech company?

First I would say: do not be afraid. The world is ours and we should be part of everything we wish. Stay informed and be open to new challenges. The world is ever changing so stay connected and embrace learning. Last but not least, invest in learning languages. ???

What do you like to do outside of work?

I have 2 dogs that I always like to walk with and spend time with. I love to travel, discover new places and cultures. When I am not traveling, I love to discover new places in Rio where I live. I go to the beach or forests and walk around the historical center, socializing with friends, listening to music and enjoying the local food scene. Carnaval is also an amazing time of the year which I enjoy quite a lot – and look forward to when we can celebrate again post-pandemic.
