It is enlightening to witness how many women are being granted leadership roles, in many industries, including governmental roles. For example many women declared their candidacy to be their party’s presidential nominee in the USA and the amount of women being granted leadership roles in the Finish government. Although this gives us women a sense of hope for a brighter future we can never be certain if these positions reside on unstable ground, could they be revoked at any moment due to our gender?
Surveys were taken and it was found that women in leadership positions are perceived as being as capable as men in these roles. In fact, while the differences were not huge, women scored at a significantly higher level than men on the vast majority of leadership competencies?that were measured. Since these surveys were conducted a few years ago the senior leadership roles of women in businesses remained relatively consistent and did not increase in numbers, unfortunately these numbers are actually declining globally. Research has shown that mens various bias’?place a significant role on the hiring of women and therefore this contributes to a lower level of women being granted senior positions.
Surprisingly, after an immense amount of research was conducted it was noted that in particular, male managers believed that women are more efficient and effective at every hierarchical level in the business, this includes, IT, Legal and operational.
An analysis of thousands of 360-degree reviews, women outscored men on 17 of the 19 capabilities that differentiate excellent leaders from average or poor ones.?
A survey was taken whereby it analysed the level of confidence that the genders have in themselves when it comes to leadership roles and their careers. The results were rather amusing, The age group of under 25 was analysed first. The women's confidence ratings were low but their competence levels were rather high. Most of the Males were viewed as overconfident but some of their competences did not match their confidence in various aspects.
Over the age of 60 it was noted that the females confidence increases and the males confidence decreases.?
If women can learn to gain confidence they would take more initiative and become more resilient, it is therefore important for women to learn this before the age of 25.
Another survey was conducted to analyse leadership effective between males and females as they grow older. It boils down to the notion of confidence. Women lack more confidence in their abilities (although they do not lack the competence) and therefore the men are more likely to swoop up the leadership positions because their confidence levels are higher. Many aspects do play a role in women being granted leadership positions such as bias and discrimination, but confidence does play a large role.

If 96 out of 100 people currently serving in comparable positions are male, and you are making the decision about who to promote, and you have a highly qualified female and a highly qualified male, what are you inclined to do? It may seem safer to choose the male. .Leaders really need to consider what blocks the promotion of women their Organization/company and ask themselves the following questions…“Am I being biased?” “do I automatically give the man a nod because it seems like the usual, easier choice?”
To conclude, it is important for us to start teaching young girls to become more confident in themselves and their competences. They should learn to be resilient and confident without losing their femininity.
