Women's Economic Advancement

I remember one day sitting at the dining table.?

There were loud knocks at the door - I opened it, and there was a sun-kissed wrinkled lady. She was begging for food. My grandma said to let her come in. The woman asked if I could cut her nails, and I did. I did it with some mental hesitation but then remembered the story of Jesus. He washed people's feet.

My grandma modeled that serving others can be a meaningful life.?

I later found out that that woman had cared for her brother all her life when he became disabled. She reduced her work and didn't get married. She rented a small room and every so often took showers.

No hardship should hinder any woman from achieving her dreams, and being able to financially care for herself.

Thinking about this woman, I'd like to open up this newsletter by discussing women's financial progress and history.?

This is the first article opening up the Your Dreams, Your Money newsletter!?

My goals are that you'll find inspiration and practical advice to achieve them! May you continue to achieve bigger dreams, and grow your money for a more positive impact.

Men's and women's DNA are 98.5% identical. We both have 206 bones. We both want to be loved and accepted for who we are - and be happy!

Unfortunately, women have been given fewer financial rights than men at some point. I know no one reading this would purposely deny economic advancement to a woman. It has happened and is a part of our history.?

The Guardian did a beautiful piece highlighting the financial progress of women, and I want to share this history with you to provide context:?

  • In 1771, New York required a woman's consent from her husband to try to sell a property, even if it was initially from her family.?
  • In 1776, the Declaration of Independence said, "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights." Still, women only had financial independence over a century later.
  • In 1884, Maine became the first state to allow a separate economy.?
  • In 1862, they approved the first loan to a woman.?
  • In 1938 Fair Labor Act required for there to be equal pay for common labor for both men and women.?
  • In 1974, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) was passed, and finally, women could get their own credit cards in their name!
  • In 1975, the first woman-owned commercial bank was opened.?
  • In 2010 Women made up 60% of the American workforce.?

Has it gotten better? Absolutely! Women today have many opportunities our mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers did not.?

Yet there are still challenges:?

  • Lack of equal pay.?
  • Women have more anxiety due to taking on additional obligations, as they still deal with home, work, and side businesses.?
  • Many women left the workforce during the pandemic due to a lack of childcare and work flexibility.?
  • According to the UN, women own 20% of the world's land.?

Despite the challenges, as a woman, you have never lived in a better time to achieve your dreams and grow your money!?

  • We live in a connected world of possibilities.?
  • Like Sarah Blakely with Spanx, you can patent a product that helps shape bodies and become a Billionaire.?
  • You can become the Oprah version of yourself and have worldwide influence.?
  • You can build a multi-family portfolio of over 4000 units like Arleen Garza, Principal at REEP Equity https://www.dhirubhai.net/company/reep-equity/.
  • You can buy your first multi-family building as I did, work a regular job, or buy a condo or single-family house!?

You can be an even more incredible version of yourself, achieving bolder dreams and making more money.?

My grandmother only had up to a third-grade education. When her mother lost her husband, her mother went from being a stay-at-home wife to washing other people's clothes to feed her kids. My grandmother worked the majority of her life.

She was never taught to manage her money, invest in real estate, or grow a business. My great-grandmother was from a well-off family, but being from a well-off family means nothing if you have never been taught about how to navigate the world of money.?

Many women want to learn how to manage and grow their money in a way that works for them.?

If you are a Woman in America, you have a great opportunity! You can grow your skill, and increase your income, so you can invest it and grow it.?

My goal is through this newsletter that, you'll find practical tips so you can have conversations about what it is that you're doing to achieve your dreams and to grow your money so you can grow your impact - for your family and the causes you care about.?

Do you have a personal story of where you have seen women advance financially??

Let's continue the conversation, learning, and betting on our dreams!?
