Women at Work - Resource List

Happy International Women’s Day! My journey through the corporate world has been interesting as I have navigated corporate spaces while trying to stay true to myself. Several years ago, I created this resource guide for myself several years ago as I was transitioning to leadership roles. While they were very helpful in transitioning from “doer” to “leader,” I realize now that some of these resources encourage women to be more like a man. Finding the right balance is key, and I believe we're moving towards recognizing that effective leadership can take many forms, not just the traditional "loudest, most commanding person in the room.”

The most interesting piece of this, to me, has been the realization that we can fight for equality in the workplace all we want, but capitalist society - and our understanding of what a career must look like, both logistically and time/hours-wise - was built under the assumption that one partner works (often too much and is not able to be present for their family) and the other partner raises the kids and manages the home.?

So we are struggling to operate under an outdated system.?

I read a damning article in fall 2020 that noted that women often marry their own glass ceiling . The corporate world, for the most part, is aware and trying to achieve equality for women. But until our partners fully understand what it looks like to show up fully at home AND in the workplace, women are fighting a losing battle. Marry someone who understands terms like “weaponized incompetence” and “the mental load,” and are doing everything they can to embody equal partnership in every aspect of life.

So, with that being said … here are some resources that shifted the way I saw myself in the workplace, and gave me the confidence to go out and lead. Take what’s helpful for you and leave the rest.?

And please let me know what books/articles/podcasts/leaders have been helpful for you! I’d love to keep updating this list.?
