"If we don’t have a seat at a table, we will build our own table."

Who or what has influenced you as a leader?

I was blessed to grow up in a family that instilled in me the “I Can” mantra. My grandmother would say, you never say “I can’t”, but “I can, I will or I’ll try.” I learned very early the power of affirmations and how she encouraged and inspired me to believe in myself, my gifts, and my talents. There were numerous women who have been instrumental in my leadership journey that gave me an opportunity to try something new or inspired and encouraged my gifts and talents.

?I witnessed firsthand servant and transformational leadership with my grandmother and former bosses who truly inspired me to accomplish my goals and aspirations. These were leaders who were visionary and had compassion, integrity, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills, just to name a few. They were leaders who inspired me to turn my dreams into reality and instilled in me that I could make a difference in my organization.

What one book would you recommend to a young woman beginning her leadership journey??

To lead others you must first lead yourself is the foundation of Identity Leadership by Stedman Graham. This is a must-read for anyone in leadership that focuses on self-awareness around purpose, passion, and performance in leadership. Identity leaders should know themselves inside and out, empower and connect with others and lead from authenticity to achieve results. Identity leaders change the world, embrace change, make a difference, fail and learn, build bridges, don’t give up, and transform. This book is a great resource and roadmap to becoming an Identity Leader.

In your opinion, what are three barriers or challenges women in leadership are still facing today?

Women in leadership face barriers in diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in pay and career and advancement opportunities. Women are still being paid less than their male counterparts and it varies among racial and ethnic groups among women. Also, within certain career fields such as Science Technology Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), there are fewer women advancing in leadership and it does not reflect the diversity of the American people. Increasing access to opportunities for women to offer their skill sets and add value to organizations is still needed in 2023. If we don’t have a seat at a table, we will build our own table.

What is your "why"?

“If I can help somebody along this journey called life with a word or song, then my living will not be in vain.” My mother named me right, I bring Joy to this world, joy is light and hope and sunshine. I brighten days and spirits with my positive energetic spirit. I educate, equip, empower, and elevate people to their greatness in life. I live by “Some people make your day better, and some people make your life better. Thankfully I am one who does both!

Please share your WORDS OF GRATITUDE for women who have come before you.?

I am the woman I am today because of women who sacrificed and paved the way for me to be in places and spaces that were close to them. I stand on their shoulders and understand the assignment that I have, which is to transform lives and make a difference everywhere I go. I am grateful and thankful that when life knocked you down and tried to keep you down, you had the perseverance not to quit nor throw in the towel. You turned your “No”? to “Yes” and when a door closed you, found another way in. Thank you for encouraging and elevating another woman and not leaving her behind, you embody my sister’s keeper. I am Because You Are.

Please share your WORDS OF WISDOM for those young ladies who will come behind you.

?My sister remember these pearls of wisdom along this journey called life:?

  • You are the author of your life. You have the power to write your own story and create the life that you want to have.?
  • Believe in yourself no matter what others say about you.
  • ?There is power in what you say to yourself. Speak life and not negativity out of your mouth, especially over you. Use your words to uplift and not tear down.?
  • Learn the power of mute. Mute negativity that may come your way, either from yourself or others. Watch what you let in your ears or dream killers that may come your way.
  • Seize opportunities. You have one time to make a lasting impression. Don’t miss opportunities, understand your skills, talents, and gifts and be able to add them to the world and make a difference in the lives of others.
