"Women who INSPIRE us"?

"Women who INSPIRE us"

Foundation

My unique name "Ananthamalar," which means "Happy Flower," was decided by my professor father at least 14 years before I was born. He had a long wait, and I was born after my two elder brothers. Born and raised in the vibrant city of Trichy, Tamilnadu, I was introduced to books and stories at an early age by my father, which helped me gain a perspective on the world around me. My mother instilled in me the most important value of being compassionate. Growing up with two elder brothers naturally made me more understanding, resilient, and determined. My grandfather was very passionate about cooking, and he was the one who taught me to cook soulful dishes. I should say I was fortunate to be born into a family that already broke many stereotypes. As I grew and navigated around the world, my family’s wisdom was my compass.

Key Turning Point

  1. After gaining about 3 years’ experience in my first job, I moved to Japan along with my husband. I was so overconfident that I thought I could easily get a job anywhere. Alas, that was not the case. I realised that knowing the local language and having certifications to prove your skillset are equally important. I learned to speak Japanese within the first few months, got technical certifications, and started working there. That global and culturally diverse experience laid the foundation for the professional I am today.
  2. The second turning point was when I was aimless and just going along with the flow in my job, and a woman leader woke me up from my slumber. She made me realise that being humble can be perceived as naive. She made me understand that "you are your own champion". Throughout my career, I was fortunate to have leaders, both men and women, who were my champions, who fought for me, and who pushed me ahead.

Key Success and Failure

  1. When I had my second daughter, I decided to follow my heart and take a long maternity break. Many of my colleagues advised me against it; however, I wanted to have that time with my two daughters. I am very proud of taking that break for 3 years and getting back to work stronger than I was before. Longer break didn’t stop me from being awarded "THE STAR WOMAN OF THE YEAR". My message to aspiring women leaders on this topic is, "Follow your heart. Each one’s story is unique. You can get back after 2 days or 2 years. It is your choice. Don’t let the world decide it for you."
  2. I always say to my team, you either succeed or learn. It is not a failure. There are numerous situations when I wish I could go back in time and do it better. Even last week, I wish I had done a client presentation better. During the lows, I tell myself, "Cricket stars don’t hit centuries in every match. They also have duck out matches."

Message to Aspiring Leaders

Believe in yourself; don’t fear that you may not be good enough. Remember that you have unique strengths and that you can create an impact on the world around you. Dream big and make your dreams come true.
