Women in Tech: Sonam
Meet Sonam. Sonam is a senior software engineer in the core platform team at Rakuten GATD group, where she develops highly available, high performance, scalable microservices and works with various teams to deliver data feed platforms.
Sonam was introduced to the world of computers almost 20 years ago, where she first explored and learned the GW BASIC programming language. The fundamentals have stayed with her since then and inspired her to pursue a higher education in computer science.
She joined Rakuten in 2019, intrigued by the corporate culture, diversity and number of segments that the company had. Being one of the biggest e-commerce platforms in Japan, she seized the opportunity to learn a new domain of digital advertising with the best technologist in the market.
Q: Are there any key challenges you’ve faced as a woman working in tech??
I have found myself doubting my own abilities, even after delivering excellent performance at work.?
Sheryl Sandsberg even said that the women in tech “hold ourselves back in ways big and small, by lacking self-confidence, by not raising our hands, and by pulling back when we should be leaning in.”?
The tech industry is a growing field, one in which we desperately need more top talent. Women’s lack of representation in this industry is of concern and encouraging more women to join will boost creativity, talent and make us all better at what we do!

Q: How was your journey in tech??
I love programming, and creating software that millions of people use is amazing! Knowing that the coupon system I built has impacted lives and made it easier for people to pay their bills, do easy accounting, shop online or save money, is very gratifying.?
I am quite proud of my career and achievements in technology. I have grown from a complete novice to a technically strong computer engineer, to a capable team lead, being able to create a global corporate impact. Looking back, I see that the challenges I faced have shaped who I am today, not much I want to change about this amazing journey.
