Women in Tech: Meet the Women Who Make ButterflyMX Great
ButterflyMX
Video intercoms, access control systems, and security cameras loved by 15,000 multifamily, gated, commercial properties.
ButterflyMX is a proptech company that lies at the intersection of the historically male-dominated access control, security, and technology industries. But at ButterflyMX, we’re committed to changing that standard by focusing on inclusion and diversity in our workforce. We make a conscious effort to uplift the women of ButterflyMX, fostering a supportive environment where women have equal opportunities and upward mobility throughout the company.
While tech has historically been run by men, ButterflyMX is looking to change that by elevating women, creating an even playing field and a more inclusive industry for all.
Our workplace culture as a whole is committed to fostering our employees’ well-being — both during their time with us and beyond. Because of this, the women who work at ButterflyMX have the chance to grow personally and professionally in their roles.
Read on to discover how we’re putting our commitment to gender equality into action.
Tech’s gender gap
While tech is among the most modern of industries — truly taking off in the last decade — it’s also one of the most homogenous and non-inclusive. In fact, a 2021 report found that 68% of business leaders feel there is a lack of diversity in their tech workforce. There are strong moral implications when it comes to representation, but a lack of diversity also leads to a stunted business and workplace culture.
The world is rife with diversity, meaning consumers cannot be reached through a one-size-fits-all approach. Companies that make diversity a priority empower people with more perspectives, experiences, and skills to have a seat at the table. As a result, consumers see themselves in your product or service — not just physically, but through ideas, approaches, and perspectives. This yields better, more powerful products that benefit us all.
Our commitment to diversity and equality
At ButterflyMX, we believe it’s important to acknowledge that the tech and access control industries are often male-dominated. It’s through this acknowledgment that we can work towards diversity in-house to impact the industry as a whole.
But while saying you’re committed to gender diversity is appreciated, it’s the results of that commitment that make the difference. And you can see those results when talking to the women who work at ButterflyMX.
Eliza Deissler, a Senior Director of Product, notes that she “felt the ‘imposter complex’ a lot at the beginning of [her] career.” It was with the support of a female role model who helped her define “what it means to be a great product manager, not just a woman in tech.” Now, Eliza says she refuses “to let my gender get in the way of my job,” instead walking into “a room with all the confidence and preparation needed to stand on my own.”
What the women of ButterflyMX have to say
Crystal Hsing, Senior Software Engineer:
“Being a woman in tech has meant advocating for yourself to have a place at the table and being comfortable operating as part of a minority. It's knowing that you will have to fight for opportunities that are often given to those in the majority. I'm thankful for the supportive workplace and coworkers I've found here at ButterflyMX and at other companies throughout my career, but I know the industry has a long way to go in terms of equity and inclusion.”
Lana Kuzyk, QA Tester:
“Frankly, I want to make people’s lives better. My job makes an impact on the community and the world, and I’m happy to feel I’m doing the right thing! So open your mind and do a job with love, creativity, and passion.”
Seanna Lockhart, Product Manager:
“Being a woman in technology to me means being open to and enjoying constantly learning and growing in a challenging industry. The ability to overcome and grow from adversity and experiences can help develop self confidence and determination in your abilities. For me being a woman in tech has pushed me outside of my comfort zone in very positive ways and I thoroughly enjoy what I do and how I have grown through these challenges and experiences.”
Ashley White, Implementation Project Manager:
“Being a woman in tech is pretty rewarding, especially being a minority woman. It's a great feeling to be able to contribute to the success of the company in a male-dominated field.”
Making space for women in access control
Closing the gender gap in tech is about more than just hiring more women. In fact, there are several initiatives you can take to foster diversity in your workplace.
For example, opting for a remote and distributed workforce allows you a larger breadth of candidates. Limiting your applicant pool to only workers in a single metropolitan area stifles progress, as does requiring applicants to commute to an office daily. Remote roles create more opportunity for women who wouldn’t otherwise be able to work from an office. ButterflyMX has a primarily remote workforce, many of whom are women located across the United States and the world, which has strengthened our diversity.
ButterflyMX also supports the women who work for us during all stages of their employment. In addition to hiring qualified women candidates, we support women as they grow in their roles at ButterflyMX. Our People team is committed to helping our employees develop professionally. We offer initiatives such as leadership development training that help women advance within the company and acquire skills that will help them far into the future.
Additionally, we recognize and respect employees’ need for work-life balance. We’ve implemented a generous paid time off policy that ensures employees can comfortably take time off work for vacations, personal and mental health, sick days, and bereavement. ButterflyMX also offers a 12-week paid parental leave program to primary caregivers and a 4-week paid parental leave program to secondary caregivers based in the United States to ensure that employees and their families have the support they need during such an important time in their lives.
Finally, to cultivate an empathetic work culture that promotes inclusion, ButterflyMX offers company-wide team-building activities to develop our employees’ interpersonal skills and to strengthen the interpersonal relationships between employees.
While there’s still a long way to go to achieve gender equality in the tech industry, ButterflyMX is taking these steps with a fierce commitment to diversity and inclusion, always striving to make a positive impact on the industry.
