A Spotlight on the Strength of Seven UWM Team Members

Visionary, optimist, tenacious, confident – just a few words we use to describe the women of UWM. In an industry where women are underrepresented, we are proud to be surrounded by so many inspiring women leaders. Whether you’re just starting out in your career or you’re a seasoned pro, we can all learn something from their stories and advice.

Many do not start their careers in finance or mortgages – how did you get your start? What were you doing at 25?

What’s an obstacle that you’ve had to overcome?

Debbie DiRosa, AVP, Division Leader

After the 2008 financial crash, I had to reinvent myself after a 15-year career in the mortgage industry. I used the opportunity to become more well-rounded, grow stronger mentally and appreciate that most often, good things come from bad. Starting over required confidence and the ability to step out of my comfort zone and believe in myself.

Ondria Floyd, AVP, Lending Support Leader

When I started at UWM I was strictly in survival mode with no goals or plans for my future. I was pregnant at the time and just wanted to collect a paycheck so I could support myself and my future son. Because I didn’t have my own transportation, I would get to work hours before my shift time. I used the time to build relationships and study the business. I was also quiet, so I struggled to learn the Verbal Verification of Employment process (VVOE). My leader moved me to the middle of the floor so I could hear different VVOE scenarios and assist me with any questions. The relationships and support from my team allowed me to develop both personally and professionally. I became the expert on the process and went on to help others and pilot new business enhancements. I gave all my focus to VVOE, eventually ranking top of the team, which and allowed me to grow into the position I’m in today.

Aria Ying, AVP, Underwriting Division Leader

I moved to the U.S. when I was 18 and didn’t speak English. I went to college and my new friends completely supported me and helped me learn a new language. Through the support of my friends and the leaders at UWM who saw my potential, I've been abIe to push through and get better every day. With determination and focus, I knew that I could do anything that I put my mind to.

Renee Harmon, VP, Leadership Development

In 2009, I took my previous ex-partner to court over the right to see our three kids (she was the biological mother). The Michigan Supreme Court decided not to hear my case.?However, it lead the Deboers to my attorney, Dana Nessel, who eventually prevailed and ended up overturning Michigan’s constitutional ban on gay marriage. Through this experience, I focused on being present each day and not looking back on things I couldn’t change. I didn’t let fear of failing or being unaccepted by others get in my way. ?

Why did you decide to build your career at UWM?

Melinda Wilner, EVP, Chief Operating Officer

UWM is full of great leaders, both men and women, who work hard, care for each other and want you to succeed. Surrounding myself with people who have the same work ethic and drive is one of my favorite things about UWM, and I’m confident it’s one of the reasons the company has been so successful, too.

Tereze Gegaj, VP, Client Experience

From the moment I came to UWM 10 years ago, I just knew the company was different. Everyone had this insane drive. It was like we all knew that even though people didn’t know UWM yet, we would make sure they did – and that’s exactly what happened.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Nikki Thompson, Team Lead, Pipeline Management

Don’t be afraid to take on new opportunities. Change is inevitable, growth is optional.

Ondria Floyd, AVP, Lending Support Leader?

Being uncomfortable simply means you’re getting ready to do something brave. You have to get out of your own way to see what lies ahead.

Melinda Wilner, EVP, Chief Operating Officer

More times than not, people are their own roadblocks. You have to have the confidence to believe in yourself before anyone else will.
