Women Making an Impact: Stories from ACE

Women Making an Impact: Stories from ACE

As we celebrate International Women's Day, we take the opportunity to highlight the stories of inspiring women connected to Adult Continuing Education (ACE) at UCC. These women are making an impact in their communities, institutions, and beyond, shaping a more inclusive and equitable future. From advocating for Traveller rights and improving access to lifelong learning to breaking barriers in leadership, each of these women exemplifies resilience, passion, and a commitment to change.

Bridget Doyle & Margaret Casey: Advocating for Change in Traveller Accommodation

Bridget Doyle is a passionate advocate for the Travelling Community, working with the Tipperary Rural Traveller Project and CENA Culturally Appropriate Homes. She is also pursuing a Diploma in Youth and Community Work through ACE at UCC. Her work focuses on empowerment, self-determination, and securing long-term housing solutions for Travellers in Ireland.

“My work with Tipperary Rural Traveller Project helps people realise their potential, supports self-determination, resilience and so much more. As an advocate for my community, I help impact the way Traveller Accommodation is delivered nationally and help provide long-term housing solutions for those in need.”

Bridget sees education as a key tool in breaking down barriers and creating opportunities, particularly for those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Her advice to women pursuing their ambitions? “Believe in yourself and never give up...Take every opportunity that comes your way, you never know what doors you might open for your and the next generation of young women”

Margaret Casey is dedicated to empowering the Travelling Community and advocating for long-term housing solutions and equality. In conjunction with the Adult Continuing Education team Mags also supports Traveller participants in studying the Diploma in Youth and Community Work in Adult Continuing Education UCC, increasing the vitally important representation of the Traveller community in third level education in Ireland"

Lyndsey El Amoud: Expanding Access to Lifelong Learning

As Deputy Director of ACE, Lyndsey El Amoud plays a critical role in developing programmes that ensure education is accessible to all, regardless of background or life stage. Her work extends beyond UCC, shaping international education discussions with her work at eucen (European University Continuing Education Network) and ASEM Lifelong Learning Hub and contributing to national policy through HELLIN (Higher Education Lifelong Learning Ireland Network) and promoting Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) to support non-traditional learners.

“Equality in education means ensuring that everyone - regardless of gender, age, background, or socioeconomic status - has the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their potential. For me, this is about more than just access - it’s about real inclusion. It’s about breaking down barriers, whether they are financial, social, or personal, and ensuring that learning environments are welcoming and supportive for all.?”

For Lyndsey, being an ally means taking action: amplifying women’s voices, advocating for work-life balance, and mentoring future leaders. Her advice for women? “Back yourself...the truth is, you don’t have to tick every box to go after something - you just need to be willing to learn and grow along the way.”

Annamarie Fegan: Breaking Barriers in Maritime Leadership

Annamarie Fegan made history as the first female Admiral of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the world’s oldest yacht club. A proud ACE alumna, she is using her education experiences to create a culture of inclusion at the Club to pave the way for more women in the future as well as fostering a culture of lifelong learning for her local community through sailing.?

She champions the need for more women in leadership and encourages young women to pursue their passions fearlessly. “I have two daughters and I feel very strongly about them having the opportunities to do whatever they want, whenever they want - it was just about breaking a glass ceiling and opening the doors for all the people that are coming up behind me.”

Inspired by the impact of her studies at UCC, Annamarie champions lifelong learning, encouraging others to embrace education: " When you meet another person it's a soul meeting a soul, I would be willing to learn from everyone every day. Every day is a school day and I love learning, I'll never stop as long as I live."

How Can We All Be Better Allies?

The stories of Bridget, Lyndsey, Annamaria, and Margaret remind us that gender equality is not just about policy, it’s about action personally, locally and nationally. Here are three ways we can all be better allies:

  1. Listen and Learn:?Understand the unique challenges different women face and amplify their voices.
  2. Advocate for Change: ?Whether in education, the workplace, or the community, push for policies and practices that support women.
  3. Mentor and Support: ?Encourage women to pursue their ambitions and create spaces where they feel valued and heard.
