1. Can you tell us about your journey and what led you to where you are now?

I was a late starter in my academic career after many years travelling and not knowing what I wanted to do. I started my PhD at 37 and had a baby at the same time, but I graduated during the 2008 recession, so job opportunities were limited. I started a business and then a second one, the Irish Institute of Celebrants, to address a gap in the market. That kept me busy until an academic role emerged. I then found a niche.?

2. As Programme Director at UCD's Innovation Academy, what aspects of your role do you find most fulfilling, and how do they align with your passion for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship?

I find the most fulfilment in empowering students to explore and cultivate their entrepreneurial potential. Facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations that merge diverse perspectives and expertise to tackle real-world challenges is equally rewarding. Guiding students through the entrepreneurial journey, from ideation to implementation, and supporting their ventures with mentorship and resources, brings me great satisfaction. I am driven by the opportunity to shape innovative curricula that foster ethical and sustainable practices in entrepreneurship. Ultimately, my role allows me to merge my passion for fostering innovation with practical educational experiences that prepare students to thrive in dynamic environments, empowering them to become impactful change-makers in their fields and communities.

3. What are some of the most valuable lessons you've learned along your own entrepreneurial journey?

Along my entrepreneurial journey, I've learned that resilience is crucial; setbacks are inevitable but provide opportunities for growth. Adaptability is key in navigating changing markets and environments. Building a strong network of mentors and collaborators fosters support and diverse perspectives. Embracing failure as a learning experience fuels innovation and perseverance. Above all, maintaining a clear vision and purpose drives sustained motivation and alignment with values.

4. What inspired you to start the 'An Entrepreneur Like You' podcast, and what do you hope listeners gain from it?

The 'An Entrepreneur Like You' podcast is committed to diversity and inclusivity by featuring a deliberate focus on interviewing women entrepreneurs. This approach aims to counterbalance the prevailing bias, where only 20% of founders in Ireland are women. By showcasing the stories and achievements of 80% women entrepreneurs, the podcast not only highlights their diverse perspectives and leadership but also inspires listeners with a broader spectrum of entrepreneurial role models. Through these interviews, listeners gain valuable insights, strategies, and encouragement to pursue their own entrepreneurial aspirations, regardless of gender, fostering a more inclusive and equitable entrepreneurial landscape.

5. What do you believe are the key skills and mindsets that students need to thrive in the rapidly evolving digital landscape

Key technical skills include proficiency in digital tools, data analysis, and programming languages. Equally important are critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity to innovate and adapt to new technologies. A growth mindset that embraces continuous learning and resilience in the face of change is essential. Additionally, strong communication and collaboration skills are crucial for navigating virtual teamwork and global connectivity.

6. Who is a famous role model or influential figure that you look up to or draw inspiration from, and why??

One influential figure from Ireland whom I greatly admire is Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell. She is a pioneering astrophysicist known for her discovery of pulsars, a breakthrough that fundamentally advanced our understanding of the universe. Despite facing significant challenges as a woman in a male-dominated field, Dame Bell Burnell's perseverance and intellectual curiosity led to one of the most important astronomical discoveries of the 20th century. Her contributions to astrophysics continue to inspire generations of scientists, particularly women, encouraging them to pursue their passion for exploration and discovery in the face of adversity. Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell exemplifies resilience, groundbreaking research, and a dedication to pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. Many amazing women are relatively invisible due to ‘his-story’ and we need to redress this imbalance.

7. How do you balance your multiple roles as an educator, entrepreneur, speaker, and podcast host?

Balancing my roles as an educator, entrepreneur, speaker, and podcast host is like juggling flaming torches—it's an exhilarating challenge! I aim to give each role its dedicated time and attention, but let's be honest, some days it's more like a circus act than a perfectly orchestrated ballet. Flexibility and a sense of humour are key; I prioritise tasks, delegate where possible, and remember to laugh at the chaos when things go sideways. It's an ongoing adventure of learning to spin plates without dropping too many!

8. What are some personal goals or aspirations you have outside of your professional career?

Outside of my role as a global speaker for impact, I'm passionate about championing women as entrepreneurs worldwide. I love travelling to connect with different cultures and explore human flourishing. My personal mission is to empower women entrepreneurs through mentorship and advocacy, creating spaces where they can thrive and bring their ideas to life. By sharing their stories and amplifying their voices globally, I hope to inspire others and contribute to a more inclusive world where entrepreneurship is a powerful tool for positive change.

9. Let’s wrap up with a personal touch! If you could spend a day in the life of any historical figure, who would it be and why?

If I could swap lives with any historical figure for a day, I’d choose Emily Bront?. To step into her world and experience the creative genius behind "Wuthering Heights" firsthand—immersing myself in the solitude of the Yorkshire moors that inspired her, and experiencing the raw emotions and intricate storytelling that define her work—would be a unique opportunity. It would also serve as a perfect digital detox, allowing me to disconnect from the modern world and engage deeply with the timeless elements of her creativity.
