WOMEN OF IMPACT
Unlocking potential through the empowerment of women and girls.?
~ South African Women’s Month??
To understand women’s empowerment, we first need to understand why women need empowering.?
Women play an important role in social development. We encounter women in our classrooms, in our homes, and in the workplace. They educate us, feed us, and nurture us.?
Yet in developing countries, girls and women are frequently seen as less valuable than boys and men. They are often made to swap their education for domestic duties.?
The development of young women is essential to the health and social development of families, communities and nations. When women are empowered to live safely and productively, and to reach their full potential, they can? contribute to the workforce and impact their communities. This can lead to economic growth and social transformation.
So how do we uplift the future women who will lead our nation??
Our vision is to drive social change to create a sustainable impact for a brighter future.?
We believe that education and skills development is the key to unlocking potential in girls and women across South Africa. Those who are educated can pursue meaningful work and contribute to economic growth later in life.?
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5 aims to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. Equal representation is important to Mr Price Foundation and we have mandated ourselves to support this vision.
What is Women’s Month?
Women's Day marks the anniversary of the great women's march of 9 August 1956, where 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in protest against carrying passbooks.
Women’s Month gives us a moment to reflect on how far we have come in transforming our society. It also allows us the chance to work towards creating a South Africa where women are empowered to take control of their own lives.
Mr Price Foundation has much to celebrate as we keep pushing towards our goals for equal opportunities, and to uplift, empower and encourage young women and youth to march towards a brighter future.
Celebrating JumpStart
JumpStart focuses on skills training and formal job opportunities in the retail and manufacturing sectors. By blending industry-specific theory with work experience and life skills, JumpStart programmes help bridge the gap between school or tertiary education and the working world.?
In order to create opportunities for young women in South Africa, we develop and match suitable talent to formal employment opportunities in the retail value chain. Of the 6149 youth participating in JumpStart in the 2022 financial year (FY2022), 82% were female.?

Celebrating HandPicked
Our HandPicked Programme unlocks the potential of female agripreneurs by shifting them from consumers to producers; stimulating local entrepreneurs and local employment; and boosting food security in urban and rural communities.?
Women are afforded the opportunity to build agribusinesses from the ground up. Through this, communities are impacted and equipped with life skills, business skills, and modern growing techniques.
HandPicked can help women growers become self-sufficient food producers or agribusiness owners. Of the interns for the HandPicked Programme in FY2022, 75% were female.
Celebrating EduRise
Our EduRise programme focuses on the holistic development of under-resourced schools, to give equal opportunities to both boys and girls. The programme also empowers educators to excel in their profession. In FY2022, 82% of EduRise Educators were female - that’s 2883 female educators empowered through EduRise over the past year.
Women in education have the power to shift the landscape and change our future. When we develop the skills of women, we boost their sense of worth and put them in control of their own futures. They are given back the right to fight for social change, not only for themselves, but for others.
Supporting women, together
Together with our partners, we are empowering young women to stand up and take hold of their futures through education and skills development. Women have the power to take back the future for the betterment of all South Africans. Please consider supporting one of Mr Price Foundation’s programmes this Women’s Month.?
