Startups and Founders urged to prepare for virus-related disruption
There has been a significant number of articles, facts and infographics distributed regarding COVID-19 and coronavirus. In the UK the NHS has been keeping people up to date via a dedicated health page as well as the normal channels. However, one of the questions now being asked by many is: How will COVID-19 affect us as individuals, how we work and our future businesses?
It is thought that start-ups may be particularly vulnerable to the disruptions caused by the spread of coronavirus. This means that founders and senior leadership should take active steps, now, to prepare for the potential economic downturn. This was the advice given by venture-capital giant Sequoia Capital.

FUNDING NEWS
Cera Care raises $70m (UK)
- $70 million

Cera Care, is a technology assisted home care provider led by Dr Ben Maruthappu MBE, co-founder and CEO. The company uses digital services and artificial intelligence to improve the care of the elderly. With 2,000 employees and 20 offices across the UK the company delivers 10,000 care visits a day. The launch of their new SmartCare technology and analytics platform, allows them to predict health deteriorations before they occur.
Currently Cera Care has 50 public sector contracts including the NHS.They also have contracts with Uber, Deliveroo and IBM. This round of funding brings their total funding to date to $90 million. They intend on using the funding to nationally roll-out the SmartCare technology and analytics platform. They also intend on acquiring other home healthcare businesses.
Inovio wins grant (USA)
- $9 million
- Led by Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)
Inovio Pharmaceuticals, is a biotechnology company based in Pennsylvania. That concentrates on discovery and development of synthetic DNA products for the treatment of cancer and infectious diseases. Currently, it is the only company to have a phase 2 vaccine for coronavirus that caused Middle East respiratory syndrome. They were also enlisted to help during the Ebola outbreak in 2014 and Zika outbreak in 2016. The company developed INO-4800 on 10th January in three hours.
Inovio's participation in this developing effort is based on their DNA medicine platforms suitability to rapidly develop vaccines. Alongside their proven track record to develop vaccine development with respect to emerging viruses with pandemic potential. Their INO-4700 for MERS-CoV is now ready to undergo trial in the Middle East where MERS viral outbreaks initially occurred. Read more.
