Women entrepreneurs are defying social expectations

We no longer live in a world where male entrepreneurs dominate. The scenario has changed. There are countless examples of women entrepreneurs making it BIG in their industry. From Arianna Huffington to Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, we have seen the rise of female entrepreneurs who have reached the pinnacle success.

This article is a small token of appreciation to all such influential women, who have defied the odds. And who have climbed the ladder of success to inspire millions of women to follow their dreams.

So without further ado, let me share the names of such inspiring women -

  1. Cher Wang, Co-Founder of HTC

Many of you would be familiar with the mobile phone brand HTC. But how many of you know that it was co-founded by a women? Yes, Cher Wang - the first name on our list, is the Co-Founder of HTC. With estimated worth of $8.8 billion, she’s the richest woman in Taiwan. She’s been part of Forbes Power List multiple times (#54 in 2014 and #46 in 2013).

A true believer in working hard to follow your dreams, she has been quoted saying as - “If you have a vision, no matter how difficult things are, everything just becomes a process.”

2. Laura Tenison, Founder of Jojo Maman Bebe

The recipient of Veuve Clicquot’s Business Woman of the Year 2010, Laura came up with the idea of this company in 1993. Looking at the frustration of one of her friends while dealing with poor assortment of baby’s clothes via mail order, she decided to create this multi-channel maternity wear and baby clothing company. With more than 70 operational stores across UK, she’s definitely one helluva entrepreneur to look up to for inspiration.

With her unique approach and different thinking, she has one advice for budding entrepreneurs - “Most entrepreneurs like myself are just lucky. They have the right idea at the right time and lucky breaks along with way.”

3. Sara Blakely, Founder of Spanx

One of the youngest female entrepreneurs in the world, Sara Blakely founded Spanx when she was just 29 years of age. Raking in over $250 millions in revenue since then, Spanx has become synonymous with a number of male and female celebrities. She’s been a member of Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world in 2012. Forbes listed her as the 93rd most powerful woman in the world in 2014. Those achievements say it all.

As a cheerful leader and a successful entrepreneur, she has a simple advice to share with people about succeeding in life - “It’s important to be willing to make mistakes. The worst thing that can happen is you become memorable.”

4. Yang Lan, CoFounder Sun Media

She’s one of the most powerful women in Chinese Media. She’s also referred to as the Oprah of China. Yang Lan’s empire spans across newspapers, magazines, television and the web. With a net worth of $1.1 billion, Yang Lan (with her husband) are changing the face of Chinese media through their multi-dimensional business Sun Media Group.

In her own words about women empowerment - ”Women are nowadays breaking the borders and boundaries. And also are trying to give a new interpretation in terms of impact you can have on society.”

That’s only one small list. The world is full of influential women who are changing the world. And defying social expectations with their hard work and dedicated approach. If you are also a budding women entrepreneur and facing the heat of social norms, then looking at the success stories of these leaders will give you the much needed courage.
