Women engineers around the world

Happy #InternationalWomenInEngineeringDay ! We’re proud to have many talented women at TEAMRWE and thought that today would be the perfect opportunity to introduce you to Coral, Phillipa and Maria, three exceptional examples of women that have succeeded in traditionally male dominated fields.

The number of women entering careers in engineering is on the rise, but we need to see that number increase even further, so we hope that their stories and advice will help to inspire even more women to follow in their footsteps.

We asked them a few questions to get to know them better and how they got into engineering.?

?Phillipa Slater (UK)?

Phillipa Slater, who is Director of Engineering, RWE Offshore (UK), has around 20 years of professional experience in engineering. She tells us why, particularly in her job, communication is key.

1. How did you come to work in renewable energy as an engineer??

I started my career in the early 2000’s working in conventional energy generation as a Civil and Structural engineer specialising in chimneys and cooling towers.?I worked in a central engineering function providing global support to development, construction, and operational assets. Even early in my career the energy transition was commencing in some markets, and I started to support initial development and implementation of renewable energy systems including onshore wind and early concentrated solar power plants. I was also involved in due diligence on “new” technologies such as wave and tidal (tidal turbines and tidal lagoons). By the end of the decade, I was offered the opportunity to start working in offshore. The split in my activities reduced from being 100% conventional generation gradually building up to a dominance in supporting renewable energy generation. I fully transitioned to offshore wind in 2012 and haven’t looked back.?

?2. How has RWE supported your career development so far??

I joined the former EON business in 2005 and have progressed my career through a wealth of development opportunities over the last 15 years. My career has been supported through formal and informal training and development from the day I started to the present day. What has made the real difference though is the people. I have been fortunate to have received support from numerous people along the way whether they be project personnel, line managers or mentors within the wider business; I know I am not alone in having received such a wealth of support. I have always found the working environment empowering yet safe, allowing you to find your own path to develop, learn and progress whilst ensuring there were project opportunities available to support practical application of the theory.?

3. What do you enjoy most about working as an engineer in renewable?energy??

Knowing that our everyday is essential to everyone else’s every day. As an engineer you leave a lasting legacy on the world, to support the energy transition and know that we are working towards a better tomorrow brings great satisfaction. Renewable energies are well established and yet continue to develop at an astounding pace, the level of innovation and creativity we can seek to implement as engineers is quite unique. To be able to say, “We were the first”, to deliver a fundamental change in approach leading to a more sustainable outcome keeps everyday challenging but exciting.?

?4. What advice would you give to women looking to start an engineering career in renewable energy??

This is a fantastic industry, with many great opportunities for the foreseeable future. There is no golden bullet, consistent, reliable delivery of the basics is essential. The power of good, effective communication should never be underestimated. We are all individuals who have our own approach and methods, be yourself, take advice and support from others to guide, but this is your journey and only you know how you would like to navigate it. Always remember it is ok if something doesn’t go to plan, we often learn more from errors and omissions than we do from success so embrace any “failings” (I have many), learn from every situation, and make sure you keep growing.
