By attracting more women to work in the the Engineering industry it has a huge benefit on the economic growth and financial stability in the UK and also creates more jobs.
Statistics from The Guardian tells us that back in 2017 there were an estimated 48,000 women working in engineering in the UK. This is around 11% of the total and they also estimated that there were over 4000,000 male engineers. The number of engineering jobs in the UK sits at 6.1m and the percentage of females in those jobs is 12%.
5 reasons why women should consider a career in engineering:
- Diversity in the workplace
- Different skills set
- Good pay
- Industry growth
- Productivity
Many women have created large inventions which have proven to be successful. Many of these inventions have come from the need to improve a certain process or develop modern equipment or fix equipment that isn't serving it's purpose. A report on the State of Engineering in the UK states that we still have an estimated annual skills shortage of up to 60,000 which means that we need to double the amount of UK engineering students in order to meet the industries demands. Female Focus tells us that companies are 15% more likely to perform better if they have a diverse workforce.
Lots of hard work and effort has been put in place to bridge the gender gap. This has been placed on encouraging women to work in engineering. This will greatly benefit the industry and the economy as a whole.
