Women-Designed NYC
Public Design Commission
NYC design review agency for permanent structures, landscape architecture & art proposed on or over City owned property
In honor of Women’s History month, we are looking back at our 2019 publication Women-Designed NYC! Spearheaded by former executive director Keri Butler and PDC’s Rebecca Macklis , the 2019 publication and research initiative was a first step toward achieving the ambitious goal to recognize all of the unsung women whose work has shaped the public realm of New York City. The publication focuses on women-led projects awarded by the Public Design Commission over the past ten years and includes a wide variety of project typologies representing a cross-section of the built environment - from parks and streetscapes to artworks, cultural facilities, and infrastructure. It also includes a timeline of the women members of the Public Design Commission.
Originally launched as part of the 37th Annual Awards for Excellence in Design, the publication was then exhibited at The Diana Center at Barnard College and at Gracie Mansion as part of the "She Persists: A Century of Woman Artists in New York" installation. Every design in this book is the result of the hard work of many people, inclusive of all gender identities. It takes a team to build a great city, and it takes strong women leaders too.
Thank you to all of the partners who made this initiative possible including the Associates of the Art Commission, the AIANY Women in Architecture Committee, the AIANY Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the Center for Architecture, the NYC Commission on Gender Equity , and the Barnard and Columbia College Architecture Department.
