We have a general expectation that life is full of ‘adulting’. You know, all the stuff that you don’t really want to do each day but the consequence of not doing it would be worse. All those things that can be filed under ‘boring but important’.

For example, the dishes need to be washed, the laundry needs to be folded, the bills need to be paid, the kids’ homework projects need to be finished.

And we also extend this to business. Think about tax season. Clearing your email inbox. Tidying your desk. Sitting through a boring meeting because you feel like you should. Continuing a client contract out of obligation rather than because it’s the best fit for you or them.

We do things that are out of alignment out of a sense of duty, and ignore the energy drop or stress that this causes.

Think about every moment in your day where you think ‘I really need a coffee/some chocolate/a cigarette/a glass of wine/gin and tonic’. I’m not a smoker but there are sometimes moments where I understand why people take it up!

Those moments are about more than just being tired, or irritable for no reason. I think often if we zoom in a little in those moments we would realise that what we are feeling is a drop in our energy. And we often assume that it’s physical, but my hypothesis is that usually it’s emotional and triggered by something that we don’t want to do.

It’s the classic story of the people who become parents and when the fog lifts after the kids are sleeping through or are in school or even go to college, they realise they’ve forgotten the elements of what used to make life feel enjoyable. All responsibility can do that to us, and I’m not saying that responsibility isn’t good for us. I think it’s an excellent thing for us to have to carry, but what I’m talking about is over-responsibility.

When we are so consumed by the responsibilities we have - whether to kids, our spouse, our family, our staff, our superiors - we stop noticing that we aren’t enjoying anything any more.

In all kinds of ways, we’ve deprogrammed a lot of the red flags that our bodies and brains send us when we’re out of flow.

What would you do differently if you heeded those red flags? What difference would it make to your day? Start tracking your energy around particular tasks and see if you could make small changes which improve your day.

Let me know in the comments, what do you wish you could wave a magic wand and stop doing?

Thank you for reminding us that we are not alone in the "rat race" called life. And that we sometimes need to stop to enjoy and celebrate life rather than focus on our mundane daily tasks of "must do's".
