There’s this whole narrative about how when you’re self-employed you have to wear all the hats and do everything yourself.
I think that is one of the most damaging narratives we can have because it perpetuates the myth that it’s possible to build a thriving consulting business without embracing the need for leadership. And specifically, without becoming the CEO of your consulting firm.
Sometimes we can also have the expectation that we should be able to manage without help. How many women do you know who feel awkward about the fact they have a cleaner? Or prefer not to be home when their cleaner comes? We can so easily bring the same expectation into our businesses and feel guilt over hiring people to help run things more smoothly.
I speak to so many women who long for that freedom lifestyle instead of their business just replicating the chaotic weekly schedule they left behind in corporate. The way you get freedom is setting up your business to run without you. If you can’t take a week off at short notice without losing money, you aren’t a CEO, you’re an employee.
When you really start to understand what leadership looks like in your business, you’ll realise that it’s not about having a long and complicated job description as CEO of your business. You should only really be doing 3 or 4 things.
A helpful question to have in your mind is: should I be doing this?
Every time you do something that is beneath your pay grade it can spark the idea for a role in your team that you could start to map out and recruit for.
It’s one of those things that can feel like a bit of an eye roll moment, but do you know what your hourly rate is? I’m not saying that because I think you should price your paid services by the hour. I don’t encourage any of my clients to charge by the hour or any other time-based rate of pay.
It’s more about knowing what your time is WORTH to your business, so that when you DON’T take on paid client work and do your own admin instead. You can see ‘ok so that is $1000 or $5000 - whatever your hourly rate ends up being - that I am missing out on in order to do an hour of work that would realistically cost me $50 to outsource’.
And yes, the numbers often end up being THAT stark! It’s a real eye-opener!
This week on the Seven Figure Consultant podcast I am talking about time management now you’re a CEO.
I discuss:
- Why you need to embrace leadership to grow your business
- Feeling uncomfortable about having a team
- The only 4 things that CEOs should spend time on
- Setting up your business to run without you
- Rethinking the way you do your schedule
?? Head here to listen to this week's episode in full 079 Time Management Now You’re a CEO.
And let me know in the comments, what’s the next role you will create in your team?
Free Report - The Six Elements of a Seven Figure Consulting Business
I've created a free PDF report called The Six Elements of a Seven Figure Business. It’s my most popular free resource and in it I outline the 6 areas of unscaled businesses that need to change in order to move past being ‘booked up and burned out’ and shifting into that higher gear that gets you cruising again.
It’s the framework that helps consultant women like you find their feet and get back to leading the business, rather than being buried in client work and back-end business operations.
