There’s a stage of business where you can be unused to the amount of chaos that suddenly gets generated.

You’ve developed your business single-handed. Now, it’s grown to the point where you need to take on more people, but there’s no infrastructure in place behind the scenes. I see clients all the time who have two people and then suddenly they have ten people and that changes the dynamic.

You have to completely rethink how you do things. What structures do you need in place? What does the business do? Who do you need to deliver that? The business has been working great up until now but suddenly you’re praying against work coming in because you don’t know how the business is going to cope with it. It’s a completely different ballgame to when you were trying to get established and you were praying for every sale to work. Now, it’s the opposite.

And instead of everything being done on gut feeling and excitement, you start to realise that if you introduce a new product or initiative, you will overwhelm your team. What’s going on? You’ve worked really hard. This should be a champagne moment as you celebrate your growth. Things are going really well on the sales side but suddenly you are the bottleneck in the company you have grown.
