Women Consultants, Are You An Overthinker Surrounded By Underthinkers?

Do you feel very bogged down day to day in your business?

Do you sometimes resent your team who get to clock off at 5 leaving you to pick up the pieces of whatever went wrong that day?

Does it feel like if you want something done you always have to do it yourself?

Recently I read an article in the Guardian entitled, ‘Why I’m Glad That I’m An Overthinker’ by Annalisa Barbieri. It was one of those moments when you look at a headline and think, ‘that’s me’. I have been an overthinker my whole life. So many people treat overthinking in a negative way. It’s frustrating. Overthinkers see things that other people don’t see. We plan. We look at all the angles. Our minds are busy with our projects, coming up with ideas for how we can achieve more, and all the other situations we are aware of from the daily news to friends’ birthdays to getting the boiler serviced.

Annalisa talked about how overthinkers need to avoid spending too much time with underthinkers because you have to do the thinking for them too. You are carrying the mental load. If you do all the thinking about running your home life, and then all the thinking about running your consulting business, and even though you’ve got a team you’re having to tell everyone what to do, you will be exhausted.

When you’re building a team it’s vital to think about what support you need and how you are communicating with them. You’ve carried your business in your head for so long and you know how you want things to be done. But does this mean instead of reaping the benefits of asking others to take on roles, you’re doing the thinking for them?

You need to let go of the things in the business that maybe you have held onto very tightly until now. I’m exploring this topic in this week’s episode of the Seven Figure Consultant Podcast.

Great topic for discussion. I would add, “empower others to act” and then observe what unfolds.
