Women in Construction Week 2024 Spotlight: Anna Hughey

What attracted you to the construction industry and how did you get started?

Growing up with an older brother I was always interested in building or creating just about anything. From playing with Legos to building tree houses, I was always eager to get my hands dirty and learn something new. I came into the construction industry with the same mindset. I enjoy learning new skills, being challenged with problem solving questions and ultimately being a part of something bigger than myself. The construction industry allows me to do exactly that along with helping provide the customer with what they need.

What is your favorite part about working in the construction industry?

My favorite part about being in the construction industry is the communication and engaging with new people on a regular basis. Whether I’m ordering new materials from vendors, speaking with my MSS team, or engaging with the general contractor and other subcontractors on the job site; communication and building relationships is what intrigues me the most. It allows me to learn from others, get to know them on a more personal level and speak for myself to create a name for myself in this industry.

In your opinion, what impact do/can women have in the construction industry?

Personally, I believe that women can really help make an impact in this industry through creativity, increased productivity, and improved communication in the field. I believe that we see things differently and can bring different opinions to the table. Women generally have an agenda and strive to stick to it, so I do think that productivity can increase, and schedule dates be met with the assistance of women in the field. Lastly, women have an advantage of being able to listen and communicate even with tough barriers to reach a level of understanding and agreeance.??

What advice would you give to young women just starting their careers in the construction industry?

For women coming into the construction industry, the advice I have to give them is to speak with confidence in your knowledge, try to learn a new skill each week (onsite or in the office), and never stop asking questions; it only helps you grow.
