What attracted you to the construction industry and how did you get started?

The construction industry offers a wide range of projects and tasks and this variety can keep the work interesting and challenging. Construction is often considered a stable industry, as there is consistently a demand for new construction and infrastructure projects. Construction projects require problem-solving skills and often involve creativity in finding solutions to design challenges or unexpected issues that arise during construction. Getting started was easy. I’ve acquired a few certificates in Project Management which helped familiarize principles such as scope management, cost management, time management, quality management, risk management, and procurement management.

What is your favorite part about working in the construction industry?

I find satisfaction in breaking stereotypes and paving the way for other women to enter the field. Being able to challenge gender norms and excel in traditionally male-dominated industries can be empowering. Construction projects often require problem-solving skills and creative thinking. I enjoy the challenge of finding innovative solutions to design problems or logistical issues that arise during construction. Working on construction sites can foster a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork. I’ve developed close relationships with my coworkers and enjoy being part of a team that works together to complete projects successfully.

In your opinion, what impact do/can women have in the construction industry?

Women bring diverse perspectives and experiences to the construction industry, which can lead to innovation and creative problem-solving. By having a more diverse workforce, construction companies can better understand and meet the needs of a diverse clientele. Women bring valuable skills and expertise to the construction industry, ranging from project management and engineering to design and sustainability. By leveraging the diverse talents of women, construction companies can enhance their capabilities and competitiveness. Also, as more women enter and succeed in the construction industry, they serve as role models and mentors for future generations of women considering careers in construction. By sharing their experiences and insights, they can inspire and support others in pursuing careers in the field.

What advice would you give to young women just starting their careers in the construction industry?

Build a Strong Network: Network with colleagues, mentors, and industry professionals. Building relationships can provide valuable support, guidance, and opportunities for advancement. Seek Mentorship: Find mentors who can offer advice, share experiences, and help you navigate your career path in the construction industry. Look for both male and female mentors who can provide different perspectives. Invest in Education and Training: Continue to invest in your education and training to develop your skills and expertise in construction-related areas. Consider pursuing certifications, attending workshops, or enrolling in relevant courses to enhance your knowledge and qualifications. Be Confident: Believe in yourself and your abilities. Don't be afraid to speak up, share your ideas, and take on new challenges. Confidence can help you succeed in a male-dominated industry and earn the respect of your colleagues. Embrace Opportunities: Be open to new opportunities and experiences, even if they may seem daunting at first. Volunteering for new projects, taking on leadership roles, and seeking out stretch assignments can help you grow professionally and expand your skills. Stay Resilient: The construction industry can be challenging at times, but don't let setbacks discourage you. Stay resilient in the face of obstacles and setbacks and learn from your experiences to grow stronger and more resilient. Advocate for Yourself: Advocate for yourself and your career advancement. Don't hesitate to ask for opportunities, promotions, or raises that you deserve. Take an active role in shaping your career path and advocating for your goals. Build Your Personal Brand: Develop your personal brand and establish yourself as a knowledgeable and reliable professional in the construction industry. Maintain a strong work ethic, deliver high-quality results, and cultivate a positive reputation among your peers and colleagues. Support Other Women: Support and uplift other women in the construction industry. Building a supportive community can help address common challenges and create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for women in construction.
