The official announcement hit news wires that General Ellen Pawlikowski retires in September. Gen. "P" was our next door neighbor for a year while, then, Col. Chuck Helwig served at Los Angeles Air Force base. She was featured in AFCEA's series that discussed diversity issues in STEM-related fields.
For the next month or so, you'll read about this woman's impact on defense, the Air Force and global security. The accomplishments are impressive as well as her examples in showcasing the Air Force's core values of Integrity First; Service Before Self; and Excellence in all that You Do.
I want to take just a moment to articulate how this human influenced my family. We spend a lot of time focusing on how women in charge provide young girls with a 'be not afraid to succeed' attitude. Gen. "P" certainly did that for my daughter, Alex, seen in the photo during the reception after the General received her 4th star. What is often missed is how women in charge influence young boys. My son was in 7th grade at the time when we attended potluck outings with our neighbors of Officers' Road. He was able to absorb that his Dad reported to a woman of power, intellect, and compassion. That fact wasn't news worthy. It wasn't awkward. It just was.
Hats off to you, General "P"! Thank you for starting the generation of just is.
