WOMEN CAN #DOIT: Busting Myths About Getting a Tech Career

Between 2017 and today, tech jobs increased by 63%, and tech job demand is estimated to be 40 times higher than creative ones.?

This significant growth means that many companies still have a long way to go to close the skill gap to fill their ever-increasing positions. We know that there are many misconceptions that prevent people from entering the tech industry, so we're going to uncover five of the most common myths about technology careers.?

You need a degree. One of the most common myths about careers in the tech industry is that you need a college degree but don't have one. There are several paths to an engineering career, and a degree in computer science or related disciplines is just one of them.??

Employers want to make sure you have the skills you need to succeed in that role and provide a solution to their problem. For many students, our academy is the first contact with technology. Our teachers support them through accelerated learning programs to ensure they have the skills and knowledge required to secure their first role in the industry.?

You’ll get stuck in one career path. Career paths in the technology area are endless and may suit your tastes. You can see that many of the skill requirements are similar between roles. Therefore, if you have mastered the basic skills and want to learn more, there is nothing to prevent you from switching roles.?

There’s no room for creativity. You may not be able to see your technology creative career like everyone else, but the role of multiple technologies requires creativity. From web design to front-end development, the key to success is the ability to be creative and come up with new ideas.?

You must be a math genius. It is undeniable that some tech jobs require strong math skills and that those who naturally like numbers will benefit. However, this does not apply to all professions. Problem-solving skills and logical thinking are more important in certain programming languages like JavaScript. Or, if you're creative rather than mathematical, it might be a good fit for a design-based role. Remember that you don't have to be the next Einstein to take on an engineering role. There is something for everyone.?

Women are not interested in technology. Technology may be a male-centric industry, but that doesn't mean women aren't interested in it.?Many women have a lack of confidence and awareness that their tech career is not for people like them, preventing them from entering the industry. Say there is. This is in contrast to lack of interest.?
