Abstract: Research on job satisfaction and gender has yielded mixed results, underscoring the need to understand how men and women may experience job satisfaction differently. This study builds on extant literature by examining how extrinsic rewards, intrinsic rewards, work relations, work-life balance, and work design contribute to job satisfaction among men and women. Moreover, the study examines these relationships in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using measurement items from the International Social Survey Programme Work Orientation Module, the study examined data from 766 employees in the United States who were employed throughout the pandemic. Findings revealed that women and men reported similar levels of job satisfaction, although the drivers of job satisfaction differed across genders. The findings and implications of the study can assist managers in maximizing job satisfaction among employees.
Abstract: Family-friendly policies promoting work-life balance contribute to desirable outcomes such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment. However, additional information is needed about the impact of various flexible work options. While flexible work may increase job satisfaction due to the autonomy it provides, it can also create work-life imbalance. This study examined work flexibility variables. A clear relationship was found between work flexibility and job satisfaction; additionally, job satisfaction increases with greater flexibility to deal with family matters. Participants indicated that the greatest job satisfaction came from the opportunity to work often from home, but not always work from home.
Abstract: This study explored gender differences in job satisfaction and the role of employee activation determinants. A survey of 566 U.S. workers found partial support for prior findings, with men reporting higher job satisfaction than women. Regression analyses revealed employee activation variables, including engagement, meaning, belongingness, leadership, and career meaning, predicted satisfaction for both genders. However, certain activation aspects were more influential for women, supporting that non-traditional factors increasingly drive satisfaction. The findings reinforce the complex, evolving relationship between gender and satisfaction in today’s workplace. Organizations seeking to enhance satisfaction and performance should focus on cultivating high activation among all employees.
Abstract: This study aimed to examine the relations between high-quality relationships, meaningful work, and affective commitment, and evaluate whether protean career orientation moderates the relationship between meaningful work and affective commitment. We collected survey data from a sample of working adults to test the research hypotheses. The findings provide support for the proposed model. Consistent with the tenets of the work-as-meaning model, high-quality relationships were positively related to meaningful work, which, in turn, predicted affective commitment. Furthermore, the relationship between meaningful work and affective commitment was stronger for those high in protean career orientation. This study extends the literature on meaningful work and relational coordination. It offers practical insight for managers and others who can help foster high-quality relationships and meaningful work.
