Women in Agriculture/ A Carrot Farm Tale..

We recently visited a carrot farm and noticed more than half of the workforce digging out carrots were women, they were diligently at this task. In a full day’s effort the group managed to fill one Eicher truck full of carrot bags that will now go to cold storage and from there, will be transported to destination markets when the price is right! Kids and us had a lot of fun and found it rejuvenating to be out in sun, having Dal Bati Churma sitting in the farm and interacting with farmer and the workforce and learning about their work.

It is known that 78% of India's employed women work in agriculture. As per the Annual Periodic Labour Force Survey, 2021-2022, agriculture has the highest estimated female labour force participation of 62.9 % With growing urban migration by men, the agriculture sector is being managed by women. Women contribute to #agriculture through multiple roles as cultivators, entrepreneurs, and laborers.

Do you know what female farmers are called?? They are called “farmerettes”

As the days lead up to international women’s day.. it is important we recognize and give due value to women across sectors. When women receive ownership of the land, their confidence, their bargaining and decision-making power in the household increases. When we recognize and find a way to pay for work at home (childcare, elderly care, household work, groceries, laundry, putting things in order, management of day and night, and making sure house becomes home..) we empower the women even more. When women can make a significant contribution in hardship environments of agriculture.. it goes without saying they will be successful in corporate sectors and leadership positions only if given proper chances, equal opportunities and if we try effective removal of unconscious biases.

P.S. I also tried my hand at a make shift arrow and bow .. :) haha
