As a Woman, Thanks

As a Woman, Thanks

Whilst I’ve been shining the spotlight on the global inequalities of women over the past few weeks I’ve been meaning to create some positive space for our allies; especially those closest to home.

Becoming a parent for me has given me some of my most vulnerable moments and a glaring awareness that work is still needed to make it a more equitable world for women especially for mothers.?

We don’t have to look too far back to see how much has already changed and women are proving their value and worth in male dominated spaces repeatedly.?

?

What has been heartening to see over the past few years from my perspective is more men actively championing and ‘leaning In’ to women dominated spaces, i.e. getting involved in caregiving whether that’s towards their children, partners or homes.? Whether it’s taking on more caregiving or role modelling inclusive behaviours. Seeing you in action inspires and empowers others to do the same, so here’s a little thank you.

?

Thanks to the men who are proactively using all of their paternity leave.

Thanks to the men who are opting out of the narrative that they must be the money maker.

Thanks to the men that are actively engaged and involved in their children’s schedules.

Thanks to the men that see the value in protecting their partners “alone time”.

Thanks to the men who understand the toll of pregnancy and post-partum and willingly dig deep during these times.

Thanks to the men who can sit with their partners and remind them that they are doing a great job just because they are.

Thanks to the men who are supporting their partners in making their dreams a reality.

Thanks to the men who see the complexities of working mum life and enable a balanced approach.

Thanks to the men who are cheerleading their women in all their glory as they are.

Thanks to the men who are actively encouraging the part time mums to keep to their part time hours without guilt or fear of consequences.

Thanks to the men that are championing mums for promotions.

Thanks to the men who are challenging gender stereotypes and their own biases.

Thanks to the men who are creating a space for women to use their voice.

Thanks to the men who are championing all women because they see the value in what we bring to the world not just the table.

?

Without you, change is not possible.

Thank you so much for writing this and spreading an important message. Equality works both ways. We’ve come a long way in the last 10 years but I feel there’s so much more to be done to support the amazing women that surround us. And it starts with us being more open, honest and vulnerable. The truth is, we all need each others support to create the life we all want.

I realise I should have tagged my own men so here goes: James Logan for ensuring that it wasn’t just lip service when it came to your first paternity leave. David Stearn for making life a little easier when my baby needed feeding. Bob Hughes for fully embracing my working mum status. Steve Cornick for sharing your story & inspiring me to actually write this. Jonathan Channing for being a constant cheerleader to me. To the guy who shows up each week to swimming classes with his baby even though he’s the only guy. To the man who saw me struggling to pack my bags with a screaming baby and a restless toddler who instead of huffing and puffing started packing my bags for me. I know I haven’t tagged everyone who has stood and made a positive difference but I hope you get the sentiment.

I absolutely agree. It is imperative that man are acknowledged and gratitude is expressed. It’s important that we continue to have that strong bond with one another. Afterall, we’re all in this together, in some way shape or form.
