Police units worldwide have joined forces in a series of covert operations targeting one of West Africa's most feared criminal networks - Black Axe. Operation Jackal III saw officers in body armour carry out raids in 21 countries between April and July 2024. Interpol called the operation a "major blow" to the Nigerian crime network but warned that its international reach and technological sophistication mean it remains a global threat.

Engaging employees in security awareness training is crucial for minimising cyber risks within an organisation.?
The 2024 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report highlights that human error contributes to 68% of data breaches, highlighting the need for effective training. Phishing remains a major threat, with users often falling for phishing emails in under 60 seconds.
To counter these risks, businesses can enhance employee interest in security training? and significantly reduce cyberattacks vulnerabilities.?Addressing common reasons for disengagement and fostering a culture that prioritises security can motivate employees to take security awareness seriously and protect against potential threats.
Africa Food for Thought feeds children so they can learn. Reading for meaning is one of the most critical skills any child can develop. A study released in 2023 shared that 60% of children leaving grade 1 do not know all of their letters, and more than 80% of grade 4 children cannot understand what they are reading.?
We are proud of the work that our partner preschools are doing to fight against this. Visiting a creche and seeing the children working on their alphabet, learning sight words, or deciphering sounds is inspiring. However, we are often saddened by the poor state of the 'reading corners' in these schools. Lack of resources means that these children have limited access to books, and many of their books are old, tattered, or not engaging.?
?Our Roald Dahl Day book drive will improve the situation at our preschools by asking our partners to go through their shelves at home and bring through books their children have outgrown. We are particularly looking for preschool books, including board books for little ones, read-to-me picture books, and simple first words independent readers for our grade R kids. Books for older children and adults are also welcome and will be shared with our 'families programme'.?
Please drop off your contributions by the 13th of September 2024 at our offices. Special arrangements for weekend drop-offs can be made with the office in advance.
