Woke Me Up When This Is All Over

It’s now August.

Life goes on or does it? Much has been put on hold or cancelled as we do our best to make the most of this extremely challenging year.

Once this is all over, whenever it is, one can only imagine the content that COVID-19 will spawn - the movies, the plays, the books, the documentaries, the songs and the rest of it. Part of its mass appeal will be due to the fact that we all went through this. It's not just relevant to people in America, Europe or Asia. We all lived through this.

A few years from now, walk into a bookstore and you will see a corona section. This sounds far fetched - there probably won't be real life bookstores a few years from now.

What will exist forever will be the second-guessing about how this has been handled.

It hasn’t been the finest hour for many leaders, but many members of the public have acquitted themselves just as poorly. This has brought out the best and worst in people and unfortunately we're seeing too much of the worst and not enough of the best

We’ve made our way through a number of emotions. Skepticism led to panic which brings us to malaise.

The desire to return to normalcy has faded as this is our new normal.

While we try to get through our day retaining our sanity, patience and positivity the world rages on.

Whether it's escapism or boredom, people are consuming more content than ever. These days it’s hard to tell if the news is a Black Mirror episode, what is on TV these days (Ultimate Tag, Love is Blind, Love Island 2020 sports) or if a Black Mirror episode is a documentary.

I watched the first episode of Muppets Now, which is yet another Muppets reboot and it has big shoes to fill. Now only was the original Muppet Show one of the greatest TV shows of all time, but its opening credits are famous for inspiring Zoom.

I don’t understand what Muppets Now is trying to do - if they’re trying to appeal to a younger audience, they may as well emulate The Hype House. If you don’t get this, it’s because it’s a TikTok reference and it’s very difficult for anyone who’s not a millennial to understand anything about TikTok.

Speaking of explanations, imagine trying to explain 2020 to someone who just got out of a coma. What would be the most bizarre thing you tell them?

That Doolittle which is a really bad movie has the third highest box office of the year?

That Mr Peanut Died?

The Circle?

That Ellen de Generes who appeared to be the most loved and admired person in Hollywood is really universally disliked?

That Elon Musk named his son called X ? A-12? (I appreciate the desire to give your child a name by which none of the social media handles are taken, but this is taking it a step too far.)

Speaking of names, that not all "Karens" are called Karen and that not all women called Karen are "Karens"?

Although in the case of @Karen on Twitter, this tweet may not have aged well or aged spectacularly depending on your perspective.

Our collective sanity is on the threshold of breaking or just not caring anymore. I personally had to stop caring about the news or social pressures. I had to turn off all sources of news from TV, radio, internet and social media. I decided to only focus on issues I can fix. Since doing this I started to fell happy again.
